Hi,

I'm interested in peoples latency settings they're using for Cross. After lots of tweaking I managed to get my core i3 laptop (SSD, 8GB ram) down to 256 samples or 5.8ms in 44.1 mode. I'm using CDJ 350's as controllers and soundcards.

Should I be able to achieve better than this ? My friend who uses Traktor says I should be able to get down to 2ms or less as that's what he uses in Traktor.

I have auto-gain and limiter off to use less cpu also.

Auto gain and limiter are not to smart to turn off. They are to stabilise your sound. Only turn off if you need to do so for specific styles where you go to the extremes on purpose.

I don't see why I need auto limiter on if I'm not adding any additional gain, and all mixing is done externally. It sounds absolutely fine provided auto gain is off.

Limiter safeguards your equipment from peaks. Autogain brings tracks to more identical level.

Unless you use other programs to achieve this before adding a track to Cross there's no reason to disable the functions.

Again unless you need it to work different for your audio tricks. You started by mentioning to do it to reduce cpu. I just mentioned what the negative effects are. Damaging equipment and volume jumps between tracks. If you have your way of working around this feel free.

I understand what you're saying RoJeC, but I just dont think its necessary. You don't have limiters on CDJ output, they just play the track at its recorded volume and output it to the mixer. Which is essentially what I'm doing.

It IS necessary if you turn on auto gain, as then you're potentially amplifying the track past 0db, which would clip the peaks in the track unless you used a limiter. I'm not adding any gain, so the track itself is just output as is. Like I said, its definitely not distorting.

I equalise track volumes in the external mixer, outside of Cross, like you would normally do in a 2xcdj/turntable + mixer setup.

I think your assumption is wrong that all tracks are 0 db. This is were the autogain helps you for.
You should not worry about tracks that are amplified by autogain, the tracks where the gain is decreased are the problem.
In your setup these are overpowered.

The used compressor only kicks in when there is a volume problem. It does not dynamic change the volume. So by disabling you're switching of a safety for your equipment and the crowd as you can never manual adjust for this in time.

Somewhat the same applies for not using autogain. Of course you can do without. But using it will reduce the range for modifying volume per track, which generally makes it way easier to do mixing and keeping the energy leveled. You'll have more time tuning and using effects instead of leveling volume.

I never said all tracks are at 0 db, but in their stored form, they cannot exceed 0 db unless they are amplified after loading.

But like I said there's no need for the safety limiter, because I'm not amplifying my tracks in software. Unless the software is secretly amplifying stuff even when additional gain is off, then its impossible for the track sample values to go over 0 db.

I just think an ear and VU meter is better suited to matching levels than software. I never see CDJ only DJ's having problems with their levels.
