you can do both in ableton dude, use it for live purposes
you can also use it for production, and relitivly easy to use
you can record samples from records loop it, warp (time strech) to your tempo
Personally i use Ableton as the host with a bunch of plugins such as Native Instruments Massive also use reason 4.0 also as it slaves to ableton using rewire. Reasons a little more difficult to get your head around but stick with it!
