Cross sees my USB Audio device, but won't let me route to it

Postby Len Senater on 05 Feb 2016, 17:47

Hello,

I recently upgraded to the full version of Cross DJ after testing out a whole bunch of other apps, and liking it (and its helpful community) the most. The main reason for the purchase was to enable headphone cueing, without which I would not be able to use it for actual DJing.

I have a Traktor splitter cable, as well as a small USB audio interface with 1 stereo input/output. Cross works fine with the splitter cable (albeit in mono), but I would prefer to be in stereo if possible.

Unfortunately I have been unable to get it to route the headphones through the USB and the mix through the built-in audio (or vice versa); something I was able to do quite easily in other programs.

Cross sees that the USB interface is there - it appears in the Built-In Output drop-down list as a choice - but does not show it as a sound card option in the routing diagram below. I can get it to play Simple Stereo/Split Mono through the USB interface OR through the Built-In headphone jack, but not Master to one and Cue to the other, which was the whole point of buying an extra sound interface in the first place.

Please advise.

Thanks,
LEN

What os are you using.
In win you have to use asio4all.
For mac you have to aggregate soundcard.

Useful info in the manual..

Soundcard not available/working? Try the 32bit version of Cross (is also installed).

Sorry, I am on Mac OSX 10.10.5

I did refer to the manual, and read through the routing section, but was unable to figure it out. I will search for "aggregate" and see if that points me in the right direction.

Sorry, but there I cannot find anything in the manual about "aggregate/aggregating" sound cards (unless it is using different terminology that I am unaware of).

I found the answer here, and now it works!
(Spoiler alert - you have to use Apple's Audio MIDI Setup utility to create a new "aggregate" sound card)

Len, just a word about the splitter cable.

The essence of this cable - and the reason why it's different than a regular headphone splitter cable - is that is splits your single stereo output (like a headphone jack on a tablet) into two MONO channels. Then they make it so you get sound out of both L+R sides of each part of the splitter, again in mono. But at least that way you get sound from both speakers and both sides of your headphones.

So, there is no way to get a stereo splitter cable the way you want to use it. There is no cable that can make two seperate stereo streams where there is only one to begin with.

Yep, I get that. The cable worked fine, but knew it was only mono, which is why I wanted to figure out how to get my USB audio interface working. It's a little $10 USB dongle with stereo in (mic) and stereo out (headphone) jacks. With this I could send stereo out to the speakers through the USB jack and stereo to my headphones through the standard built-in headphone jack (or vice versa). Once I figured out the Apple Audio MIDI thing above, everything worked just fine. The splitter cable is no longer being used, but will kick around in my kit as an emergency backup.
Thanks for taking time to help clarify.
LEN

PS - note to others who might be thinking of using a cheapo interface like this one - it works fine (for now), but it is too wide, so it partially blocks access to the other USB port on the MacBook, making it impossible to plug in both the sound card and my controller at the same time. I had to go get a short USB extender cable in order to get them both to fit.

 thats kinda how i started on my way to digital djaying ,, Mixvibes Home 6 and a usb sound doggle ,, move to Cross 1.25 and used asio4all to add together the two sound cards ,, later got the U-Mix controlller to use for sound card /MIDI controller ,, if you run across a latency issue,,ie difference between the monitor sc and the master sc,,its because of the speed/clocking difference of the two different sc ,,
