When going over a topic it annoying to notice one (we) assumed the wrong and could have helped sooner..
The latency is the duration of the sound that is send from the CPU to the soundcard. The higher the less responsive your actions are as it can't be interrupted. The lower the value the more your CPU has to work (more frequent adding smaller parts).
You did the right thing when it stuttered as this means your CPU can't keep up.
However it pretty likely your PC was busy doing other things (as well).
Typical causes
- auto updates
- analyzing track(s)
- anti virus
- downloads (e.g. torrent)
- powersavings like hdd sleep, usb hub (internal) sleep, cpu 'optimized' (not max), fan speed up before CPU speed up.
- wifi use
-in Asio4all to many cards and channels selected
- other programs running
- active syncing
If you don't use video it might be worth to disable this in Preferences as this will free a few percent CPU usage, but only if you have an older CPU (as on newer CPU the above are more likely to cause it)
The idea is that the controller should feel like every push should respond without delay.
