Mixer keeps crashing

Postby dylan75 on 18 Apr 2015, 11:06

While DJing the other night my entire mixer crashed. I am playing off a U-Mix Control Pro.
It wouldn't come back on again and kept giving me a "this device is drawing too much power" message. Any idea of what could be happening?
The mixer will still not power up with USB.
See attached screenshot. Not cool!

Not likely the controller is the source of the problem, unless it became defective somehow but even then this would be rare.

I would remove the controller from the Hardware in windows as the easy first step to see if it is released; it might be that the blokade is set by hardwareID.

External hdd is most likely involved. These are high USB power devices. For older versions using dual power cable (2 usb to 1 hdd) is recommended.

The distribution of USB power is done per USB host. One host may have multiple USB ports connected, even in PC/laptop. In many cases 1 host delivers only 1max power for all ports combined... the position of ports/host usually is written in the tech guide of the laptop/PC.

Also be aware that charging devices (so connecting any smartphone/tablet) has the same impact to the max power.

A powered USB hub usually helps out.

I always connect my USB-soundcard(/controller) direct to PC/laptop to avoid any audio issues due to priority in USB (though don't know for sure if this is better).

Audio dropouts? Increase audio 'buffer size' value.

Soundcard not available/working? Try the 32bit version of Cross (is also installed).

I have tried powering it with an external power source and I'm getting nothing. It was being powered through USB and worked fine up until now. Ive hardly used it that much. I play off the top of the range Macbook pro so there is no problem on that front. What else can I do to get this fixed. Is there a distributor here in South Africa that I can send it to? Please let me know. Thanks

I would try connecting it to a different machine first. If it doesn't function, also try a different cable (at the other machine).

This may narrow it down to being the cable and/or the controller, or the other side, a setting at your mac that may still block the controller.

I don't have a Mac, so can't help you with that

a quick search for the issue gives the impressions it's an Apple issue.

Grabbed one post of a forum that may help.

Also lot of 'cable' issues are mentioned...

Re: the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. in response to Kevin Maness

The USB2 spec states that the max. current available on the plug is 500 mA. That's why some devices from the PC world sport a strange two-headed USB cable, so they can suck the whole Amp from the computer.

But in this case, if the power management is deciding there's too much power drain from the get-go with nothing plugged in, there definitely is something wrong. Mind you, some of the components on the Mac are internally connected to the USB infrastructure, such as the trackpad, camera, etc. I'd suggest the following:

Reset the SMC: http://support.Apple.com/kb/HT3964
Run the extended Apple Hardware Test: http://support.Apple.com/kb/HT1509
If all else fails, schedule a visit to the Apple Store. Hope the Mac is still under warranty.

Hi there, there is nothing wrong with the Mac. It does the same thing on other Macs. Is there anything I can do to fix the mixer? It is definitely a hardware problem.

Hi there, my Mixer is still down and my Mac is fine. Is there somebody in South Africa that can support me to get it fixed. We have tried the mixer on a number of other machines. The mixer is dead. Its hardly been used
