trying to understand a it actually works

Postby djkrazykris on 29 Mar 2015, 17:31

i have figured out most of how the program works and i love it, but one thing that has always given me a problem is when i am trying to take an older track and lay down grid markers to straighten out the tempo....now everything looks good, but when i use the sync function with two tracks beatmixing it does not stay in sync. the only thing that i have found that kind of works is continuously hitting the sync button to catch it back up. do i not have something set right, is there something that i am missing?

Not really sure what you mean, so I'll mostly reply simplified so we can go back and forth getting it addressed...

If you press sync (in the screen) you sync the position in the cycle (bar or beat, depending on setting).
The speed is also synced, by BPM value.

If you have a track that has an irregular beat (drifting) then it can go out of sync again as Cross does not change speed or position again without command.

If you use a controller it may be that the sync button acts different, e.g. only BPM (so your mapping needs a change for your way of working)

i've tried it with a controller and without a controller. this is something that has always given me a problem. another way of me trying to explain my problem.

I have the track say: wild cherry - play that funky music

i go through and adjust the beatgrid so that everything should be lining up. but when i go for playback with a track that is perfect grid with modern technology, the wild cherry song will still not sync up, unless, i continue to hit sync every measure where i put a new beat grid. from my understanding the beatgrid is supposed to be "adjustable" correct?

 it you use the tool tips to show the beat grid function and use the editor to adjust the grid ,,not shure if you can different/more than one beat grid in a track ,, dont adjust the grids so not totaly familiar ,,

In order to fix the problem you must go to "settings" general tab an enable sync link. That should take care of it.

Just bare in mind, tracks like wild cherry - play that funky music
and a lot of old retro, especially so the funk that has a break beat, and also bare in mind on top of this that makes it harder to grid, it was not the digital world we know today and it was more so live played/recorded no syncing back in that day as I am sure you are aware or you are now, so it does not matter how much tech you have it will be impossible to get it synced no matter what software you use you cant expect the impossible just yet lol,

So just mentioning, sure if you where to warp it painfully beat by beat in a Daw similar to ableton, you might, get away with it, but even then some old none 4/4 songs are just impossible even with. But I think that track is doable just not automatically with DJ software could be, or maybe the record jumped or the recording has a jump or inconsistent join, such things will cause beat gridding problems and these might not be overly obvious to the ear or eye.

I have to warp and doctor a lot of my older stuff In ableton/bitwig etc before hand to make it easy on Cross etc etc etc.
