Re: Mac does not show "Files" tab in left browser menu?

I have been into music since I was 6 years old having to play music for my dad and his friends while they were drinking so I grew up all of these years [now going on 53] being the entertainer in my circles and for a few years now I have been worn down which is why I had to switch to automated softwares so I set a playlist to run and whenever I need to I can go drop a live session in between.

The only live DJ software I would need for my purpose would be something which shows a colored bass beat in the waveform so I can very quickly line up and kick off the first downbeat of any tune "without having to use headphones", remember I am not a live and commercial DJ anymore so to each his own. Traktor does show bass beats but to my knowledge is is never the same color in different tunes so i would still need to use a headphone to identify the first downbeat.

For this Cross is pretty good. Cross sets the beats pretty accurate (some tracks are just to irregular...). In addition Cross uses a Quantise and Snap feature that allows you to set the way to make transitions relative to the beat (1/8 to 16 beats). Meaning the track or action starts to match(sync) with the set accuracy.

Same applies for hot cues and hot loops as well samples.

Biggest advantage versus 'playlist' players is that tracks are stored in memory so actions are done really fast (Cross needs less then 1ms; the soundcard may need a few more ms.)

And Cross can play (almost) any filetype (vid and audio).

Last and maybe not least, if you buy yourself a $5-10 usb soundcard to minijack you can setup your Cue channel with any headphone. Eventhough Cross levels Gain etc. precue to start at the best 'first' downbeat may be better (long intro's etc.).

If you don't need the Cue you may just use the Cross Free version (one of its limitations). Check the comparison chart for more details, but from what you point out you can use this one; it has no time constraints. (Whereas Cross Demo has all functions for limited period).

And if you prefer using a mobile device... MixVibes has products for that to (android/iPhone/iPad). Function are more or less identical. In Amazon store the Cross DJ Pro Android may still be just above refund price (0.00)...

Soundcard not available/working? Try the 32bit version of Cross (is also installed).

So it's like Mixmeister which has always used "snap to beat" which helps, I do fully understand not every tune even with the same or close bpm will beatmatch right out off the bat but for the most part if the waveform can display a standard color for the bass beats this will be helpful for me, meaning if for example in all tunes the bass beat is the color "blue", then I can know exactly where in the tune to line up with the existing playing tune, can Cross do this?

Virtual DJ has the 4 blocks in it's waveform with the first and biggest block supposed to be the first downbeat but that doesn't work for the most part, the first downbeat can be on any of those blocks so one will still need a headphone to know.

Cross works fine with the beats when used in Autoplay mode. To that level it has a grea algorithme.

However what you mean (I suppose) is the challenge for every DJ. Some tracks are to start from the first tone, others by the first serious volume, others by down beat etc. And this may even depend on the moment it is used during a gig...

In Cross several (upto 8) points/loops (locator) can be set which are saved with the track info. In addition you have the Cue that can easily by moved from first 'auto' down beat to your wanted position.

How I use my music is in most cases have the Cue at the auto downbeat (unless this doesn't make sense). If there is an other likely start position I use a Hot Cue (e.g. at the end of an intro). Some may have even more optional starting points for good mixing.

I would suggest to download it and throw in like 100 tracks, analyse the tracks (CTRL-A + click analyze at right node dock). Play around for half an hour/hour and see if it matches your expectations.

Meanwhile it will always be some challenge to prep the 'next' track without headphone... But on the scale from playlist program to full DJ setup it is at the better side...

As mentioned this is something to be done once.

The Automix feature in Cross is also pretty decent, allows for beatmatched mixes (although I haven't toyed around with that much yet) and even harmonic mixing?

Thanks for the kind words.

And for those that care, I am a working DJ (weddings and events, the occasional after-party for a concert or venue performance) and I use Cross professionally. I have a DDJ-SX, soon to be augmented by a Denon MC6000mk2 and full version of Serato too and I had the full version of Traktor. So I am using Cross because I like it for the job I have to do.
