Can slightly hear control tone on channel 1(fixed)

Postby djsn0w on 27 Jan 2014, 21:17

I've been using Cross for a while now, and last night while at the club I could hear the control tone slightly in my phones over the track (I use vinyl for DVS) on channel one, channel 2 was clean and I could only hear music. I use the u46mk2, and it's set to phono right now... my decks have line out so I'll try switching to line tonight, has anyone else had this problem? It's really annoying when you're trying to get in the mix...

If you search some in the forum (or manual) you'll get the answer. What I understood is that phono in is only to be used for recordplaying if no amplifier before connection. if not use line in.

Check that the monitoring of inputs is muted

It is, and there is no amplification before the soundcard the way my turntables are set up now, they have a switch for line or phono out, they are set to phono... this problem just started, the right channel is fine, with no tone audible, the left channel has just a hint of the control tone present.

Thanks I'll try that tonight and get back to you... the good news is it's not really audible on the PA system... so it didn't ruin my gig.

Solved my problem, forgot to update my post for the benefit of fellow Cross users... here goes.

Whatever the issue, the first thing I did when I got to the club was switch my tables to line output, and the u46 to line as well, no more issue... didn't try to do anything else, since I am a firm believer in "if it aint broke, don't fix it", might have had something to do with the phono amplification in the u46, might not... hopefully this solution may help someone else at some point.

There are usually a few issues with phono vs line inputs.

1) grounding/earthing - phono signal way more prone to pick up unwanted "noise"
2) signal level difference (very low on phone compared to line)
3) RIAA-curve. Quality of the filters can vary.

If the option is available, I'd always go with line setting on TT (and using the built-in pre-amp and RIAA-correction) and not bothering the rest of the sound path with it.
