moving entire collection from one location to another

Postby acemc on 20 Nov 2013, 03:10

I would like to know of there is a easy way to relocate my entire collection.
Lets say from: hd1/users/acemc/music/djmusic to: hd1/djmusic
I don't want to have to reanalyze my entire collection again which will take days to do over. The relocate missing files option only seems to allow you to relocate 1 track at a time (even using the missing files resolver. Is there any way to actually do this without losing the waveforms etc...

Hi acemc,

Cross saves each song waveform as a ANALYSIS file in the "Peak" folder which you can set in the general preferences.
You can move your tracks by selecting them in Cross then right click -> remove from Collection.
Afterwards you can re-import your tracks via File -> Import Directory.
They should be allready analyzed if you load them the next time.
But please test this procedure with just a few tracks before moving your whole collection.

Best regards
Marxon

Thanks so much Marxon.
It worked perfectly!!
I had to refill my playlists but at least I didn't have to reanalyze my collection. Much appreciated - Thanks again!!

It might have worked, but definitly is NOT the best way to do. Several fields in the Collection are not in the tags of your files, so deleting tracks is not to good to do; as you mention also playlist are gone.

The easy way was just to move your files and in Cross 'resolve missing tracks'. Once you selected the first track, it will ask you if ALL missing tracks should be changed to this location. Click OK and it will change (with intelligence, so takes some time for large collection)....
Sometimes you need this a few more times but a change at your level should require only one.

And if the peak(analyses) folder is changed, just change the folder reference in the preferences of Cross.

So if you want your playlists back with little work, go back to your previous collection (backup??) and do it like this.

--------------

If you want some more flexibility for your 'physical' location you can use virtual drives which refer to specific driver or folder.
In my setup I use e.g K:\ for audio files and l:\ for video files.
at my PC the files are at C:\music C:\videos
at my laptop this are External hdd e.g G:\music g:\videos

In Windows choose RUN and type
subst k: c:\music {enter} and than
subst l: c:\videos {enter}

This is a basic function of Windows(& DOS) and does not have performance issues.
The only thing you need to now is that any new install of any programm will not recognize this on the first run.(so restart application once)
Regards,
Ronald

Thanks for the info rverzuu, however I don't keep all my music in a single folder.I have a main music folder with hundreds of subfolders inside that
it will ask you if ALL missing tracks should be changed to this location

Strangely, It didn't do that for me. I have about 80K tracks in my collection, when I selected the new music folder using the resolver, it began scanning through my entire music collection to find the first song (which took forever), thereafter it did the same on the next track

Did you select a single track and than right click to 'resolve' ?
For solving a complete collection you should have used the option via the main menu to have all tracks that are missing listed in the resolver.
Further it should work as described before. The size of the collection should not matter. It just will take time as Cross checks the existance of each file at the new location before the track is updated.

If you did use the latter method, likely you found a bug.
