strange sound quality problem

Postby Knite on 22 Dec 2012, 17:01

hi all

getting some weird sound quality problems within Cross at the moment, and i have a feeling its always been like this for me :s

windows 7 64bit
4gb ram
audio 6 sound card

Cross 2.2.0
vinyl on 1210s
xone 32 mixer

to keep it short and simple its as though im not getting full sound quality/frequency within Cross (whether it be internally or externally through a mixer) have tried all sample rates and buffers, tried 3 sound cards.

if i play an mp3 through winamp/foobar2000 and route it to channel 1 on my mixer and master out of there back into the audio 6 i get this in audacity...

Image

if i run through Cross, i seem to always get a dip in the same place in the high frequencies like...

Image

everythings zeroed, no effects, like i say tried internally recording within Cross, tried different onboard soundcards

either im doing something stupidly wrong or its a windows 7 thing?

any help would be very greatful this is driving me mad cheers and sorry if ive left any important info out :D

(just noticed the highs seem to stretch out a little higher on the Cross recording?)

its almost like them frequencies dont even exist?

ive tried boosting both in Cross and audacity, which effects the spectrogram even more, its like im boosting high mids, no twinkles etc

hmmm

That's really strange - it's almost like you have a LPF in place at 16KHz.

Can you do the same test with Pink Noise?

Here's an online generator for White, Pink, and Brown Noise.

http://onlinetonegenerator.com/noise.html

I'll try to run the same test shortly and see what my results are.

both foobar2000 and Cross were identical on pink noise as shown here

white noise however showed up different results

Cross

i might try removing everything to do with Cross and re-installing latest build tomorrow, gotta get to the bottom of it

I ran a test using a FLAC pink noise file and then recorded the output from Cross DJ.

The spectral analysis was basically identical on both and went all the way up to 23KHz.

If I had to guess it may have something to do either with the fact you're using MP3 (which is lossy, and may implement a 16KHz low pass filter) or someplace else in your signal change.
