Misprint in manual?

Postby MusicMeister on 16 Dec 2012, 22:57

Not sure where to post this, so I figured I'd drop it in here. :)

I believe the following is a misprint in the manual on page 37 (for Cross DJ):

Perform one of the following actions:
• Turntable with Phono output for Timecode Vinyl - Set the input selec- tor for the inputs where the turntable is connected to, to lINE.
• Turntable with Line output, CDJ Player - Set the input selector for the inputs where the line device is connected to, to lINE.

I believe that first one should be:
Set the input selector for the inputs where the turntable is connected to, to PHONO.

It would only be set to line when the turntable has line level output or if you were using an external phono pre-amp.

I guess 'technically' it's the 'Cross DJ Product Range' manual that covers most everything.

USER MANUAL
- CrossDJ
- Cross
- CrossDJ LE
- Using MixVibes Hardware

Just trying to learn the features of the software, and yes, I'm skipping parts like the install... but I'm finding some interesting things about the software so far... :)

Hi there!

There's no misprint. Most of the time, timecode tracking will be tighter if no RIAA (phono) preamp is used (at least with the U46 soundcard).

However, playing real vinyls thru Cross will sound better if the U46 phono preamp is used instead of the software one.

As the main usage is timecode, we recommend not to use the preamp.
Timecode Vinyl => U46 Line, Software Phono
Timecode CD => U46 Line, Software Line

Nothing's perfect in there, as without preamp, the vinyl signal quality might decrease in noisy conditions...
The real solution is to test both setups and use the one with which you feel more comfortable!
Some clues:
- Want tight scratching => no RIAA preamp
- Want high quality direct vinyl playing => RIAA preamp
- Very noisy conditions => if noise is emphasized by preamp, better not use it, otherwise use it.

Hope this is a bit more clear for advanced users.

Beginners should follow the manual's recommendations.
