Questions about Vfx Control

Postby kayab on 06 Jun 2012, 21:04

Hello,

First of all, I asked to General Chat category because I can't post to other categories.

We have an internet radio about philosophy in Turkey. Now we are going to broadcast our live cameras from our studio.

We planned 6 cameras and 2 PC's connected to Roland Edirol V-8 Video Mixer.

And for the broadcasting, we plan Vfx Control (switch between song videos and studio's videos and our mixer out)

So, my question is;
in Vfx; can I set our video out and mixer out seperately to channel A, and play video in channel B, and switch between these?

Also; which kind of video/sound capture card should I use?

Also; I'm using an Intel I5 notebook with 8gb ram(64bit) and trying the demo of Vfx. I get a little kind of backsound all the time. How can I solve this?

Thanks.
We use our micrhophones with Behringer Xynx 2222FX analog mixer.

Don't get a Edirol v8 video mixer....
http://www.roland.com/products/en/VR-3/
Look at getting a Roland vr3 ...it a 4 channel audio mixer & 4 channel video mixer ( so no need for your behringer audio mixer for your mic,s )
And has a USB video output for streaming and for recording
And has a VGA in put on one off video channels so you plug your laptop running mixvibes Vfx .... No need to spit your videos channels with the Roland v8 as all the video mixing is in the software

the edirol v8 has two VGA inputs ,the vr3 has one ,but you only need one for Vfx....the v8 and the vr3 are about the same $$$$$

Hello KAYAB!

I am Ralf from Germany and I will try to get you informed in a way.

"So, my question is;
in Vfx; can I set our video out and mixer out seperately to channel A, and play video in channel B, and switch between these?"

You are able to control video and audio separately in Vfx. In most live conditions I use my external mixer to control the audio channels and the internal (in the Vfx Control) to do the videomixin. If you have to save space and / or equipment you also have the possibility to assign the X-fader to video only (great FX!!!) and the channel faders to audio only. This enables complete control for audio/video. I prefer the external mixer for ergonomics only because when I am working it will be for hours and this saves my shoulders. ;)
To get it more detailed: You can for example use the sound (with or without video) from channel A and overlay the video with some grafics, pics or camerastreams from channels B to D. And if you do videomixing with channel B you can use the X-fader and the special video-FX available for this. If you know about the possibilities of Vfx you will try to use sound (maybe with some video) on channels 3/4 and use more video on channels 1/2 so you can use the FX on the x-fader.

"Also; which kind of video/sound capture card should I use?"

Sorry, I don't have a good answer for this. There are plenty of solutions on the market. But there's something you gotta know: the cheap solutions work! BUT: they need much of CPU for encoding the videostream. This leads nto only into CPU-usage but also into a certain delay of the stream. If your using cameras and microphones then you should be aware of the time difference and mic and video are not in sync. You will need delays on the mics to get rid of this. I don't know if there are any USB-devices which do the encoding outside and are fast enough so the PC doesn't generate any delay. There are many units like this for professional video editing for "big" PCs. But as you know this you might ask your dealers for PC stuff. Vfx knows how to handle everything, WINDOWS itself can deliver. This fact stays the same with audiocards, videocards and also digitising units. The better your choice, the better the performance. this is as easy as can be. :!:

We have a public holiday in my area and I am about to meet some friends. I will give more information later but I gotta go right now. So follow this threat as there's more information to come.

...PART 2...

"Also; I'm using an Intel I5 notebook with 8gb ram(64bit) and trying the demo of Vfx. I get a little kind of backsound all the time. How can I solve this?"

Backsound? Do you mean a slight hum or noise? If you get this then it should be a problem of your system/laptop. Vfx itself doesn't generate noise over the signal. The sound processing with Mastertempo and audio-FX is state of the art and hassle-free. Did you try a good audio interface? Or did you use the internal soundcard? the internal card mostly generates artifacts from the internal bus and power supply and different other sources. Try a good audio adapter and you will be fine. Even the interface in the Vfx CONTROLLER is nice. I don't get any problems with it I got with the laptop-internal sound. And if you wanna use any top-notch RME or whatever soundcards it is no problem. Vfx will use anything, windows provides.

"We use our micrhophones with Behringer Xynx 2222FX analog mixer."

You CAN do this but you can also use it in Vfx. As I am used to route audio through my external mixers I think you're doing good. And you can have some cheap delay after the master of the mixer so you can synchronize your mics with a possible delay of video processing.

Now there's something to be said about the additional processors like the V8.

Vfx itself is very good in processing video "on the fly". In addition to the possibilities of the V8 or the VR3 it has more filters, more possibilities for the crossfade and plenty of FX for each videochannel. The overall power of your system depends strongly on the used PC. Stupid'n'nice videomixing for VDJs like me is fine on a good laptop. But at the moment you wanna work with multiple inputs and maybe full HD resolution you should think about a more suitable PC system which usually won't fit in a laptop's housing.
The overall processing, en-/decoding, audioprocessing and controlling tooks place in the CPU. All the special video FX and fades are calculated in the GPU. So a state of the art videocard is absolutely necessary! and to do all the jobs around (working out your camera streams...) you will also need a strong CPU. The i5 in your laptop is fine for trial but not for your daily work. In addition you will need some nasty mainboard and a real fast HDD-system (Raid possibly). Then you will need the multichannel camera digitizer. While writing this, I see a 19" PC housing with 4HUs and at least 3 Monitors(1 main for the displays, 1 for additional tech-displays and maybe 1 for aircheck).
When you set your system up you will encounter the problem, that Vfx sends the videosignal through the video-output you chose. It doesn't generate a usable stream you can use directly for sending. This is because of the usage of the GPU. So you will need a second PC for processing the video/audio and sending the stream.
This could also be done by a VR-3. more tech-talk in part three...

Re: Questions about Vfx Control

...and now, here's PART 3!

let's talk about different setups.

the first one: VFX-CONTROL with a good multichannel digitizer for cameras and an external mixer. This is a fine studio for doing awesome stuff. In this setup you will stuff your Vfx with a few camerastreams. You can choose the different cams (even a webcam if you want) as a kind of tracks and drag'n'drop them into unused players to fade them in. It is absolutely like using finished videos. If you think about one video already running, you can prepare up to 3 cameras simultaneously, read: load them into the other players. After you loaded a cam into a player it will take maybe a second until it is available because Vfx has to synchronize the stream to its own system and often the driver of the digitizing card starts first when being called. This is another topic which calls after a really GOOD PC.
So what you have learned is, that the 2x2 Players in Vfx don't care whether they are filled with audio, video only, video WITH audio or even camerastream. And you can mix audio and video differently in the system.
What you need to get it streamed is a second computer with a video/audio-in possibility, some "grabber card". This PC shall provide the stream to the uplink so you can be seen worldwide. This CAN'T BE HANDLED by your video-PC (unless it is outstanding!!!).

Now, here's a thought about the
second setup:
Exchange the grabber for the second PC with the VR-3. This unit is really fine in encoding the correct stream you will need for uplink. Additionally you can mix your Mic in there like WAZZA said above. And you can also use this as a kind of "Master unit" just before the uplink. What I am talking about is the "fallback". What if your PC with VFX-CONTROL fails for a reason? If you are using the VR-3 you would have the chance to play some emergency video (preproduced) from two simple DVD players and you will still have two cameras available. You can also think about using one or two cameras constantly on the VR-3 and the others (with FX and text screening) on VFX-CONTROL. This multiplies your possibilities.

the 3rd setup:
think about less camera FX and the use of two VR-3: Now I change the multichannel Grabber-card of the VFX-PC into another VR-3. It delivers a ready-to-go stream to Vfx. And this stream shows up to 4 cameras. You need only one player in Vfx, maybe player 4 and keep this player constantly "open". In the VR-3 you can black-out the output so it won't matter. Now you can play whatever you want with the first 3 channels. This means audio for background, videos, prerecorded reports, and so on. And when you need the cameras you simply turn to your VR-3 and open the channels there. This safes your possibility to show your station ID within Vfx because the cam-signal is completely routed through Vfx and not changed unless you need the fallback solution. Oh, I forgot to mention: you can constantly show your Station-ID in Vfx when you once prepare a nice "PNG-file" with the grafic and use it as a "frame" to be overlayed in the videooutput of the software.

I think this is MUUUUUUUUUUUCH to be read and understood. I won't write more at the moment because I think it will be better if I answer to your questions.
At the bottom end: YES, it's possible. There are a few obstacles in the workflow but I am about to solve this. I am mainly speaking of MIDI-programming of secondary controllers so you can easily control video and audio of all 4 channels differently. So are the PLAY and CUE buttons. But that's only a gain in know-how and I got rid of it...
Now it's on you to understand what I have written and ask questions if I didn't answer them in advance...

Have lots of fun!!!

the doubt is:
I have to worry about performance?
I have to enable SLI on video cards, or not?
thank you

1.: Best greetings to all from Kaya. I'm in contact with him. He will join when he gets his Vfx (his serial)... We'll welcome him.

2.:@CAS: I never tried SLI (What a pitty!!!) because at the moment I only work with a laptop. Your PC is times faster and better than my laptop. For deejaying you should be going fiiiiiiiiiiine!!! Even for Studiowork with some live streams added. Please have a look at this forum. I think UNCLEVIBES has posted some tipps and tricks about recording the output which should be transferable to sending the complete videostream. Hope this helps
