Well. I've seen IC based Audio systems in detail, and it is a basic rule, that every IC has a sensitivity, that can not stand, or amp clearly a signal above a specific level . When the signal goes into the soundcard, it is handeled by an IC, wich is controld by the OS using the driver. What you set in windows generates a certain DC voltage level, witch indcates the Audio Input IC the input level we want. The audio signal goes thfrough a preamp, which in U-Mix44 is sensitive to be able to handle Phono input as well. So the signal if it is too strong, simply ovverides that preamp, so even if you set the level, its gonna just adjust a distored sound only, since its not resistan you change, it is the Amplification Level of the Preamp. I know it is more detailed than you wanted, but nowdays every digital audio thing works like this. There is an another case, that can look like this: input signal -> Analog-to-digital converter -> Digital Preamp Here the signal simply overrides the converter inputs, so the coverter sapmles high levels with incorrect frequencies, witch result in distored sound. (This converter is what is responsible for that 44.1 - 16bit resolution of the soundcard - which is basicly the exact resolution of a CD- And means 96dB SNR ) (1 spent a year debug-ing and repairing BlacBerry-s, and now study as an Electric engeneer, so sorry for being too scientific).

What level you set in Windows generates a certain DC voltage level in the soundcard for the Audio IC, witch indcates for the Input IC the input level we want. Fist scenario: [Input signal ] -> [Analog Preamp with DGC] -> [Analaod-to-digital converter]... The audio signal goes through a preamp, which in U-Mix44 is sensitive to be able to handle Phono input as well. So the signal if it is too strong, simply ovverides that preamp, so even if you set the level, its gonna just adjust a distored sound only, since its not resistor that you change, it is the Amplification Level of the Preamp. I know it is more detailed than you wanted, but nowdays every digital audio thing works like this, even in phone's broadcast signal amplifires. It called DGC (Digital Gain Control). There is an another case, that can look like this: [input signal] -> [Analog-to-digital converter] -> [Digital Preamp with DGC]... Here the signal simply overrides the converter inputs, so the coverter sapmles high levels with incorrect frequencies, witch result in distored sound. Mostly correct, but for the U-Mix the input-max is set via the hardware. The panel only controls how much is fed to the software, but doesnt affect the input-sensitivity on the hardware. As you said the input of the adc is simply overdrIven. Thats why on cdjs you have to turn down the output wheb using the umixx. I'll gIve you an B+ on the theoretical Part

It's better to use a simple attenuator, than turning down the CDJ-s. Easyer way

That is not the case. I don't own those CDJ-s. And I won't spe time before a gig setting them up.
I just need a "Plug it in and works" thing, and I'm done. And the DJ coming after me must set it back...
