Strange Intermittent Audio Distortion Issue

Postby DJ Jeff Neil on 26 Dec 2011, 19:07

I have encountered a strange and frustrating issue with distortion on Cross 1.7.1.

I use a Mac Mini running Lion (OS 10.7.2) and Cross 1.7.1. Output 1 is connected to an Onyx mixer. Ouput 2 feeds the internal audio channel on the Mac Mini. This configuration allows me to pre-cue the next song using the Mac Mini's internal audio chain while feeding on air audio through the Onyx.

Usually this works well. However, at times the cue audio coming from Cross Output 2 (Mac Mini audio chain) becomes distorted and unintelligible. It will clear up by itself after several minutes, but later on will become distorted again. Output 1 is unaffected and remains clear of distortion at all times.

At first I suspected an issue with the Mac Mini's audio output, so I re-routed the audio via the USB out and a Berringer U-Control USB audio adapter. I had the same issue.

Recently I've discovered that when the Mac Mini's internal chain audio becomes distorted in Cross, it remains clear on the very same audio chain from other audio applications. For example, I can play a cut clear of distortion from iTunes through the same Mac Mini audio chain while the Cross output remains distorted.

I'd like to be rid of this issue, so any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Jeff

The best two solutions would be

1.) aggregate your audio devices as written in the Mac Support Center so that you can configure the devices better in Cross (search forums or mac support site)

2.) to get a two channel audio interface

May be a samplerate mismatch between both device or an issue with who should be clocking.
Some soundcards combination simply doesn't work.

Mixvibes Friends,

May I respectfully suggest that the audio breakup issue may well be a bug in Mixvibes Cross 1.7.1 cue channel?

Why do I say this?

1. No other software on my Mac exhibits this issue. All other audio applications and even some competitive DJ software products run without issue using the very same audio output channel.

2. The issue is temporarily corrected simply by quitting and re-launching Cross. No other change is made. Obviously, I can't quit and re-launch Cross during a live, on-air DJ show.

3. I already use an aggregate device created in the Apple MIDI application.

4. The outputs are fed through a FireWire Interface to the air feed and an USB interface for cueing.

Since this issue is specially around Cross 1.7.1, then why not abandon it for competitive software? Because, outside of this issue, nothing else comes closs to Cross for DJ work. It is a superb for my work--but repeatly losing the cueing channel is a big issue for my show.

Mixvibes, please help me resolve this issue.

Thank you,
DJ Jeff Neil

Sure, as soon as we could reproduce it...

1. No other software on my Mac exhibits this issue. All other audio applications and even some competitive DJ software products run without issue using the very same audio output channel.

Same samplerate and latency settings ?

2. The issue is temporarily corrected simply by quitting and re-launching Cross. No other change is made. Obviously, I can't quit and re-launch Cross during a live, on-air DJ show.

Reseting or initializing something I guess.

3. I already use an aggregate device created in the Apple MIDI application.

So what are the native samplerate of both devices ? Who is clocking the chain ?

4. The outputs are fed through a FireWire Interface to the air feed and an USB interface for cueing.

See previous answer.

This didn't happened in previous version ?
Very weird as we didn't do anything into the audio handling since a long time.
