Advice needed on sound quality issue please :)

Postby Lottie S on 16 Nov 2013, 19:24

Hi, I've got a bit of a problem with the sound quality coming from my record deck. I used to use two cd decks and never had a problem. However, since one of them died about 6 weeks ago I've been using a record deck. I was using it to only play records as my old laptop refused to play timecoded vinyl. This was fine but I recently treated myself to a new laptop and so decided to upgrade to the newest version of Cross. I was delighted to be able to finally used the timecoded vinyl, however the sound quality isn't the best by any means. It sounds really muddy, flat and the bass is WAY too heavy. To get any depth I have to turn up the high and mid gains right up and the bass right down. The channel I'm using with my remaining cd deck sounds amazing. The signal from the record deck is strong, at 100%, no stuttering, crackling or anything like that, its just, well, not all there. I thought it might be my stylus but as the signal is perfect I dont think this is the problem. I've been searching for an answer for days (being a bit stubborn and not liking to admit defeat!) but I give up. At the end of the day it's a hobby but it's seriously bugging me.

I'm running Cross in windows 8.1, I wondered at one point if it's a compatibility issue. Not sure about that either because it all seems to be working beautifully apart from that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

What soundcard are you using?

It sounds like to me you have some sort of problem with Line in/Phono at the Mixer end of your set up.

What of these 2 are you using?

Hey, thanks for the reply. It's a u46 mk2. I did think of what you've suggested, but it works fine with traditional vinyl. I swapped input on the mixer to line instead of phono to try it out today but it didnt work at all then, which didnt surprise me to be honest. It's either going to be something silly or a no go I guess

That muddy sound you hear is a RIAA phono equalization curve.

This tells me you are running a line level signal into a phono input of your mixer - this is where you are going wrong. The u46 only has line level outputs, so you MUST connect it to a line input on your mixer. if you cannot hear the sound when using line in, check that output levels of the u46 are high enough (perhaps a setting in mixvibes, u46 software or a windows setting)

What's your setup...
Make sure you turn things to normal before trying. Better for your ears and equipment.
If you're using turntables it likely is phone issue.
Bestvis to select line if possible.
Also disable input in audio.

If not helpful please provide more details.

I am using turntables and you need to have the soundcaerd set to phono and pluged into line in the mixer. and also what do you mean disable inputs in audio? you need inputs on for the turntable to work on the software :/
