It worries me, that I use a 7200rpm WD 500gb drive inside my MBP. You can never back up too much, but as a student expense draws me to buy what I need rather than what I greed. Backup has been a problem for me many times, losing countless hours of work over the years - as a Software Engineering student I should know better.
I'm not locked to a particular brand really - I go for names I know and reviews too. Most of my drives are WD simply because it's a well known brand and seems to be on sale the most.

I have got a noname 5400rpm in my laptop and an external packard bell 320GB. At the moment I am saving money for one of these small external harddisks without external power. Maybe a 7200rpm hdd.
does any of you use a drive that is powered directly by USB ??... I'm starting to run short in space... but i don't want to have to ad extra pluggs to my set-up
I don't use a 2.5 inch drive (laptop drive), but they are powered by USB. I Use a 3.5 inch standard desktop drive. It has to be powered externally. I think the trade off is mainly speed, performance and size for portability. But it might be good enough to get the job done. 2.5'' are also a little more expensive. I got a 1 TB WD Caviar Black, their top of the line with a 5 year warranty) for $99. Came with a free Roswill USB docking station too. Pretty cool. And I'm happy with it. ..
