GUI (Skin) freeze when loading long tracks

Postby Jim B on 12 Dec 2009, 13:01

After a few hour's testing at home, I decide to take Cross RC out and test it live (I know, I shouldn't really ;) )

Did a 4 1/2 hour gig in front of about 500 people last night. Cross RC performed well and didn't have any issues really. It was very stable apart from the GUI (skin) freezing when loading tracks.

After about a hour into the gig I noticed a slight split second freeze on the GUI when loading tracks onto the players, and as the night went on and especially loading long tracks, tracks of 8 minutes+ the GUI would freeze for about 2-3 seconds. The music still played and didn't have any audio problems. Cross 1.2.5. didn't behave like this last weekend when I used it.

All tracks were taken from a external HD.

Brave decision, but vigorous testing like that is probably the best way to show up stability issues. Hat's off to you :)

I know mate ;) but I trust the work of Cross' Dev team and my setup.

Tried Cross RC this afternoon at home (for a couple of hours) with my back up drive ( I have 2, one for gigging and one backup )and I still get the slight GUI freeze.

Yeah i was tempted to run with the RC for a gig on thursday, but at the last minute, decided not to. Got a big gig tonight, but not brave enough to run it for 4-5 hours straight. Seems to be 99% stable from home testing, but i had to uninstall as i have 2 more gigs this weekend, and no time to test....

Spose the GUI freeze aint that bad if the current track keeps playing flawlessly....
My graphics just get a bit 'clunky'/slow refresh for around 5-8 seconds on new track load-up...My CPU is @ 100% during this time (on 125 it maxes out @ 80%), but the current track playing does not sound affected.
I am running a lower spec PC too (probably the lowest spec that JUST works).
Have a check task manager/ CPU usage when this happens, and see if it peaks out... :)
Good luck Jim :)

Cheers

I played personally with this rc before we release it to you and did a 4 to 5h test in live condition (hard work isn't it ? ).
It was on a usb key of 30gb and strictly with no pre-analyzed files.

It was the #1condition to go to the rc stage.

The gui freeze are supposed to happen because we give priority to the audio.

I confirm, that's exactly how it works !

When Cross need a bit more power (new track being decoded into memory for instance), it won't ever disturbed the audio processing !! But, as the display stuff are far less important, the GUI refresh will be slowed down for a while.

Cheers,

PS: It also happened in the 1.2.5, except that the tracks weren't decoded into memory (Set the Audio Cache to 0% in the 1.3.0 to retrieve the 1.2.5 behavior).
