.WAV or .MP3???

Postby Patch on 23 Aug 2009, 10:59

Which format works best for 'Vibes? I know when I use Ableton Live I try to use .WAV's wherever possible (Live has to decode .MP3s and this uses up valuable system resource!)

Does the format have any bearing on 'Vibes? I'm using vinyl control - which format is best (if one is actually better than t'other...)

Cheers - I'm really getting heavily into 'vibes at the moment. Got MIDI control working great from my DR-202, and working on setting up my foot pedal for hands free cue point juggling!

hey ..

mp3 are recommended because the load of wavs wants more resources

convert your WAVs to 320kbs then you will have maximum quality mp3 to a small size :!: :!:

cheers

Groovy, I though that would be the case - I'm using 320 variable bit rate at the moment. It's a shame that Ableton doesn't properly support .MP3s. This means I need to have a .wav AND an .mp3 of all my tunes...

I know. Ableton decodes .mp3's to make them work in Live. This takes up system resource.

Mixvibes decodes/converts/plays files using the timecode vinyl - so it only makes sense that a smaller file (.mp3) is easier to decode.

Ok, a wav file is uncompressed audio in the LPCM format, there is no decoding needed for wav files, they just load into ram. However, when you decode a mp3 file your actualy using algorythms to extract the stored wave data in realtime into memory and requires way more resources to use.

One other thing, this statement "Mixvibes decodes/converts/plays files using the timecode vinyl" is realy off... Mixvibes actualy decodes the files using the apropriate libraries within the software and then manipulates and plays them back in the same way. You can control the software with many input devices, some of these are the keyboard, a mouse, MIDI controllers, etc., timecode vinyl is only one of these, and was originaly designed for turntable DJ's to feel more at home using the software, just like how some MIDI controllers are designed to feel more like a mixer and/or 2 CD players.

Don't know if I'd agree that I'm way off. It makes sense that if there is an interface that plays HDD files based on an external input (ie - Timecode vinyl) the smaller the file is, the less CPU is used to translate movement on the vinyl to playback of the file on the HDD...

I totally agree with Patch. This sounds very logical to me!

No mp3 files are smaller becouse they are compressed. Before an mp3 can be played back it has to be decoded into ram (i.e. converted in realtime to a waveform), wav files on the other hand don't need the extra step of decoding thus use less CPU to load/play the files....

The time code vinyl does not munipulate the output audio directly, it sends digital input audio that the software listens to and then manipulates the output audio accordingly, this is why there is more latency on the timecode input then say using a keyboard and mouse as the software has to listen to both the audio input and then send the output..

I'm gonna need the official line on this from the Mixvibes Team. Should we use .MP3s or .WAVs for the best timecode vinyl performance?
