[POLL] How do you save your digital music ?

Postby Oslo-Known-As on 26 Jun 2009, 14:52

Hello there,
I'm curious to know which back-up solution you guys use to store your music collection.
Hard drives ? DVD'S ? Flash Memory ? FTP's ? what else ...

I'm a bit pessimistic as it seems there isn't a 100 % safe solution. (My 6 months hard drive recently blew-up for no obvious reasons  )

Have you ever noticed how fragile is the hardware we are supposed to rely on ? (hard drives burns, DVDs won't work, Memory sticks dive in your whisky-coke glass :D ...)

Cheers, Grüner

I have copies of my music at different locations:

First of all i have all my music (because it are all mp3s) on my internal harddisk. Furthermore all of these tracks are stored at an external harddisk and on my xbox where there is another "external" harddisk. I hope that saving at the different locations will exclude me from data loss.

Greetings,

Steve

Oh wazza this option is old technology I really don't know how come that you are not familiar with it. Its awesome, its cheap, you can find everywhere and use it anywhere you like AWESOME AWESOME i used it but its too heavy and not so practical, but hey its still cheap solution ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I backup my collection in 2 ways
Number 1 is i have a Qnap 3 Bay NAS running 3 TB disks in Raid 5 setup
this has both my laptop and desktop full systembackups and music collection backup's

I also have 2 external harddrives one is at the bank in a saftey deposit box the other is at home once a month a do a backup and swap the drives at the bank
seems overkill i know but makes me feel safe that if my house ever burnt down (ie massive australian bush fires just around the corner from me this year)

Waw, translation please ? ;)

On my side, I do back-ups of backs-up since my hard-drives failed me several time as well, i multiply them. Agree with you Oslo Man!

Thing is, it's quite complicated to synchronise them and not to loose yourself in your files...
I sure need a hard-drive synchronisation tool

Ok the QNAP is a Network attached Storage (NAS) device, so basicly its on my home network and any PC or Laptop can use this as a central storage or as a backup drive.
This is a new model but very similar
qnap.jpg

it has 4 bays that can accommodate up to 4 Terra byte disks
Currently i have 3 disk in the device
I have setup the NAS in a RAID 5 configuration. without trying to be confusing there are different types of RAID kinda hard to explain but refer to this wiki page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
I have 3 Terra Byte disks in RAID 5 this mean i have 2TB of physical storage, If 1 of these 3 disks should fail no data would be lost. just replace the drive and the disk will sync up again automatically.

This is an expensive way to backup data but redundancy is the key

the NAS has a processor and RAM and runs its on operating system based on linux, included in the O/S are all the disk utilites file sharing FTP server tools you need
Once a new drive is detected the RAID will rebuild itself
generally takes about 2 hours to sync back up during this time there is no disruption to your files everything is accessible you don't even need to turn it off to put the new disk in
