We've been doing that for years - you don't even need to glue the wax paper to the slip mat.

Definitely makes hell of a difference, though...

The wax paper is pretty slick. You'll get it on some old 12" vinyl sleeves. Otherwise you can just use any thin plastic... (Some record shops sell sleeve protectors - those are pretty good).
