Diggin' in those virtual crates

Postby Patch on 03 Feb 2009, 20:31

How do you guys arrange your playlists? When you downlod tracks from Beatport/iTunes, etc... you get the folder with the tracks in, with the .nfo file, and usually some artwork too. At the moment I don't buy much from those sites, and when I do I usually strip the tracks out of tyhe folders and stick 'em into a folder that is organised by genre/tempo/key, etc...

If I started to buy more from the download sites, would it be worth keeping the tracks in the folders that they come in - or should I re-arrange the tracks to suit how I play?

How do you guys do it?

I like to sort out my tracks into what i call “Boxes” which are defined by Genre and Sub Genre/Style. Each track is tagged with in such a way i can recall the tracks easily using the “Selection” feature of Mixvibes 7. For example, the Genre field would contain the type of music and the Album field would contain the Style.

My file structure is set out in the same way, for example...

Dance (as the main genre)
Anthems
Divas
Classics
Electro
Electro House

etc, etc.

Breaks (as the main genre)
Acid Breaks
Booty Breaks
Electro Breaks
Funky Breaks

etc, etc.

Thats enough for you to get the general idea, this system works for me and the advanced search and sort features of Mixvibes 7 help me find everything i need quickly and easily.

You will find a system that works for you, then you will build on it to streamline your collection to suit your specific needs.

Regards,
Bryan

Nice. I like organised. Do you keep the individual tracks in its own folder, or are each of the files loose in the Genre/Type folder?

I keep all my tacks in there genre specific folders, keeping all the track in their original folders just means more clicks to get to what you want... as i add the tracks to the main folders of my collection i tag them all properly using Rapid Evolution so if ever i want to find just the tracks by a particular artist, remixer, year, date added and so on, i can.

Here you can see the way i have it set out... all my different genres, into breaks to find sub genres, then into the files that have been sorted into that particular sub genre.

The system works for me and all my tracks are tagged around this system, though you may find something that works better for you.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Well for me i prefer to tag in a my mp3s in a similar way and I have folders organised on the computer with specific genres.

As for Mixvibes, i have different mediabases saved up for the more specific Genres. Some of the Mediabases i have include

Classics

Hip-Hop

Old School

DanceHall

Club etc.

Glad to see RE making a show here! Gatko - is that pic of RE, or is it your file structure (looks like Vista...) Is there a way to add a heading to your folders for key (as shown in your pic) or is that RE?

Very smooth way of working there, i worked like this for a while myself but as i use my music in more than just mixvibes i found that organisation outside of Mixvibes became tricky. Windows search when it comes to music is nothing compared to Mixvibes so i try to keep things generic enough to suit my needs.
