Troubles with recording my mix

Postby mindster on 30 Dec 2008, 01:31

This is the #*#$& problem I have with Mixvibes.
Program is working well, > recorded mixes sounds terrible

Everytime I just wan't to practice and record my own mixes but there is always some kind of problem..
I had some start up problems:
viewtopic.php?f=268&t=10398

And this were the problems a couple of weeks back viewtopic.php?f=268&t=10989

Tonight I wanted to mix some records, but there was a hard PEEP, from the neald on the vinyl. Normally you don't hear this, but now the volume of the PEEP was just as hard as the music..
I restarted my laptop (2 times) didn't work.
Uninstalled the driver, and installed it.. didn't work
Uninstalled the program, and installed it, didn't work.
Then I downloaded U46MK2 1.41
Now everything was working completely normal.. at least I thought. I recorded my mix, but the sound was terrible!!
So I uninstalled the driver, and downloaden Mixvibes update 7.214, installed U46MK2 1.41 but the sound of a recorded mix is terrible!
The quality is bad, and it is almost only noise..
I'm using my MIC output on my laptop and both Goldwave and Wavelab are nog working well.
What is the problem?
I have bought Mixvibes in Juli of this year, but In the 5 months I'm using it, I only enjoyed mixing with it for a couple of times.. (I think I never dare to mix in front of public using mixvibes;) )
Orr there is just an explanation for al this trouble?
Please Please Please help me one more time, Because I am totally confused..
This is my config report.

Hi mindster,

First of all let me address the attitude you are pushing, we are always happy to help here in the forums but you have to understand, like anywhere else we have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to ill expressed anger or frustration... we also understand that first time use of software can be frustrating but there is a difference between aiming that frustration at other Mixvibes users and/or Mixvibes staff and letting us know your frustrated.

Secondly after reading through your previous posts where you have asked for assistance on very similar matters, i noticed that you never seen the problem though by letting the issue drop and starting new posts, as i said we are more than happy to offer you any help you may require though please try to be as descriptive with your problems as possible and don’t waste any time that we could be using to help others.

So now onto your problem,

From what i have read you are trying to play your set using Mixvibes and record it from the record output of your mixer using your internal soundcard of your laptop via the mic/line input... this method does work and can be very effective though there are some things you need to know first.

Normally the MIC input on laptops have the option to record at either line level or microphone level, however you will most likely find that even in line level mode the MIC input will record in mono only. In line level mode laptop soundcards have a very low tolerance for over deviation; this is when the input volume becomes too loud for the device and results in distorted audio with heavy pops and clicks within the recording.

Putting all things aside for now, can you please give us a short description of what software and hardware you are using and intend to use for your final setup, i.e. what version of windows, model of laptop, what drivers you have installed like asio4all, version of driver for your u46mk2... etc...

This information will help us determine the best course of action in solving your problem, i also recommend you go back to using Mixvibes version 7.100 as this is an official update and proven to be the most stable...

Regards,
Bryan

this is not problem with mixvibes software ...but more of a problem with your laptop sound card & its settings ( most laptop sound cards are SH#T )

in mixvibes output volume rack set the out put volume so its not clipping into the red...even if your running a external mixer and use your gains on your mixer to control the levels
DON'T run your out-puts into the red on your mixer or in mixvibes
your at will add distortion to your final mix

NOW TO SET YOUR LAPTOP SOUND-CARD...

go Windows START../..CONTROL PANEL../..SOUND , SPEECH & AUDIO DEVICES../..SOUND & AUDIO DEVICES../..AUDIO../..in the sound recording box click VOLUME BOX.../...another box will pop up with the title recording control...click the C.D PLAYERS SELECT BOX ( thats your line levels in-puts ) and set the VOLUME FADERS

He's using Windows Vista, the process of setting up audio is quite different from xp. And its Service Pack 1 at that, vista kicks the pan out of any laptop at the best of times...

I get the impression ASIO4ALL may be causing bother, i couldn’t determine from his other post if he actually uninstalled it or not, so i was just gonna guide him through the full thing from scratch.

I'm sorry for my behaviour on the Mixvibes forum.
It was already late last night, and I just wanted it to finally work..
Thanks you2 for your reactions and advice!

I Have a Dell Vostro 1000
AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology TL-56 1,8 ghz
2,00 GB RAM
32 bit support system
Windows Vista Business service pack 1
(not a powerfull laptop, but Mixvibes has worked on it before!!)

I have Mixvibes 7.214 (but I will install the latest 7.1 version)
Mixvibes U46 MK2 1.041 driver
Asio4All V2 ( I have tried it with and without this driver)
My Mixer is a Numark RMX40DSP,
2 Technics SL1200

Should I decrease the record volume in the settings menu?
thanks!!

This evening everything finally was working okay and I'd recorded a mix of 1,5 hour with Good quality.

First I uninstalled everything and installed it again with the newest updates,
(I Uninstalled ASIO4ALL because U46MK2 was not working with also the ASIO driver installed)

Then I decreased the record volume till 14 % (!!!!) With 14% the quality was good, without going in the red;)
Thanks everybody for your help!
I hope I can help someone out one day:)
This forum is a friendly place :D

Well your hardware al seems fine; first off start by uninstalling the ASIO driver from your laptop... if you are using the u45mk2 for Mixvibes there will be no need for you to have these installed.

After this is done, make sure your cable from the record out of your mixer is connected to the input of your laptop soundcard...

It’s time to setup the recording volume of the laptop soundcard, play a tune with Mixvibes and set all the gains on your mixer so that the VU meters are peaking at 0db (or just peaking into the red).

Now from your sys tray right click on your speaker icon and select “Recording Devices”, the sound recording input properties bow will appear. From this list highlight the Microphone input (on your laptop it should be labelled “Conexant”), then click “Set Default”, this will ensure that windows will always use this device to record your audio.

Now click “Properties”, the Microphone Properties box should now be showing, from this window select the “Custom” tab and make sure “Microphone Boost” is NOT selected.

Now select the “Enhancements” tab and make sure “Disable all sound effects” IS selected.

Now select the “Levels” tab, you may have to move the Microphone Properties box to the side to be able to see the Sound Recording Properties box at the same time... With your song playing adjust the level gain control in the Microphone Properties window until the mini VU meter in the Sound Recording Properties windows (next to the picture of the mic) peaks at around ¾ (75%).

After you have done this and are happy with the level, click apply and ok on both boxes... and your done, yeahh.

Now with the recording software you want to use make sure the mic input is selected as the recording source, then monitor the level with your recording software's VU meter to fine tune your levels with your mixer and your ready to mix and record.

If you want to record with Mixvibes and are not to sure how to do it, let me know and i’ll help you out with it.
Regards
Bryan.
