ID3 Tag Problems

Postby B.W. Bear on 27 Dec 2008, 04:25

I've seen a few other people have had issues with Mixvibes and ID3 tags but the answers there didn't really seem to help with my problem. I've just installed Mixvibes and imported some music to it, all of which is 'Drum & Bass' (according to the files' ID3 tags) and all downloaded from various locations. However, whilst Mixvibes displays the artist, album and track title correctly, it lists the 'Genre' as "Zouk".

I tried turning off ID3v1 tags and leaving on ID3v2. This results in no tag info being recognised by Mixvibes at all, unless I manually go into a file's properties in Windows Explorer, update the tags, save them and then reimport into Mixvibes. Clearly I cannot go through each file and do this!

If I turn off ID3v2 tags but leave on v1 I get the same problem as with both on - 'Zouk' as the genre.

I don't know much about ID3 tags, so I am guessing that maybe ID3v1 doesn't support free values for the 'genre' tag, and 'Drum & Bass' is not included in the available list, so Mixvibes automatically chooses the last genre in the list. But this does not explain why with just ID3vs tags selected, no tag information is picked up by Mixvibes at all!

Does anyone know if the developers are aware of this issue and whether or not it is going to be fixed? I was on the verge of buying the DVS MK2 kit but I really can't face having to manually reedit 80 gigs of audio file ID3 tags!

Thanks,

Chris

Please enter your serial number into your forum profile so we may assist you quicker and more efficiently in the future,

The problem you are having with your tags does not have anything to do with Mixvibes, tags are defined by the user or original creator only, you will have to edit your tags with a universal tag writer such as JID3 to be compatible with Mixvibes and other recent music software... Rapid Evolution by the Mixshare developers makes very light work of editing tags and enabling full ID3v2 support.

This thread will help you through the process of converting your tags,

if you have any further troubles let us know and we will be happy to help you out.

Hi Bryan,

Thanks for getting back to me. I don't have a serial number yet - I'm just trying out the trial of Mixvibes before I buy the DVS Pack.

I appreciate what you say about ID3 tags being the result of the original application that generated them, but the tags that Mixvibes cannot read can be read by Windows Explorer, Media Player, iTunes, Foobar, my friend's Serato setup, my brother's version of Torq and my Sony mp3 player, i.e. every other application/piece of equipment I've tested the files with.

Surely there comes a point when if so many other very diverse programmes have no problem dealing with the tags, but Mixvibes is unable to, it should be accepted that the program is in this respect inadequate.

Having said that, I will try one of these Mass tagging programmes and see how I get on - thank you very much for the detailed guide on how to update tags without having to rewrite them all!

From your experience, what are the chances of the developers working on this shortcoming; are they generally quite quick with such updates or should I not hold my breath?

Thanks,

Chris

I do understand where you are coming from, i was a bit confused by the whole process myself when i was sorting out my collection, though over the years of using Mixvibes and being involved in there betatesting program i have come to realise that although Mixvibes is a very versatile DJ software, the developers do strive for stability in all aspects...

If your tags are all as you want them at the moment then converting them can be done in no time at all with free 3rd party software such as Rapid Evolution, this to me is a small price to pay for ensuring that all will run as smoothly as possible when you need it to the most, i relay heavily on the media base features of Mixvibes so i take allot of time editing my tags in such a way that it is beneficial to me, and with all my tags in a uniform standard i know that if a need to edit a tag or even take notes on the fly when I’m playing to a crowd, i can do so without anything going wrong.

Be assured that after converting your tags, other software such as the ones you mentioned will still read them as they should including any alterations you make with Mixvibes (if you choose to do so).

I believe Mixvibes will be addressing this issue in future updates, but personally i don’t see the harm in it being the way it is just now... everyone has their own way of working, the Mixvibes team do understand this however trying to accommodate everyone would just not be practical.

I’ll see what information i can get for you and let you know,

Regards
Bryan
