MixVibes on MacBook using bootcamp - tips & hints

Postby bigbadselecta on 06 Sep 2008, 16:48

Hi!

I was wondering if there are some people around here using MixVibes on a MacBook(pro)?

I thought it would be nice having a discussion about things you should consider before installing Windows. Also, any hints and tips are very welcome.

Hopefully in one or two weeks I'll have some spare time to do the install & some tweaking. If you're interested, I can write a small how-to later on. Let me know.

But now I have a few questions myself as I never played around with bootcamp...

1. I'd like to create a bootcamp-partition to get XP running, but I'm not sure what size I should chose for the FAT-partition. I guess I'll have to move my mp3s to the win-partition in order to access them?

2. Do I have access to my Win-partition running OSX?

3. How stable is Windows on a MacBook? Any difference to a 'normal' Win-notebook?

4. About 1,5 years ago I created some pretty tweaked Win-XP-Install-CD using Nlite. Would you recommend using that or is it better / safer to use a 'regular' XP-cd? It used to be perfect for running MixVibes when I still had my Win-notebook... Just used about 45 MB of ram, if I remember right

Alright, just let me know if you're running Win on your mac or if you know any helpful pages...

enjoy the weekend!

i am not a macbook user, bu I had some issues to instal some driver on bootcamp.

I have already tried to instal my Korg pad on bootcamp (XP) on several macbook, its impossible to instal the XP driver.

I know that the U46MK2 driver work very well on bootcamp, but some hardware could have problem with it.

I made a small FAT partition for XP (5 gigs). i would actually recommend 10 to avoid issues when installing more apps.

I use macdrive version 7 to read my MAC partition from windows and stock all my music on the OSX partition. This slightly slows down the loading a files, but it's fine and stable as long as you analyze tracks before a gig.

i also stock all my peek files in a folder on my OSX partition.

yes

with no network installed and a few tweaks it's perfectly stable. No issues.

If you tweak is free of threats and viruses i don't see why it wouldn't be a good thing to install it. :D

ok, I'm trying to push forward now... Hope to get my Windows ready before the beta-package gets here ;)

Today I've been busy for about 5 hours copying my Mac-partition to an external drive since bootcamp / disk utility won't let me reduce my partition's size in order to get some space for Windows... First two attempts failed, not sure whether it was my external disk causing this...

Copying the whole partition takes forever...

Anyways, I'm getting close to the finish line soon

Here some information (by Apple) about bootcamp, kind of a step-by-step guide:

(German): http://manuals.info.Apple.com/de_DE/Boo ... ration.pdf
(English): http://manuals.info.Apple.com/en/boot_c ... -setup.pdf

Here some utilities that might come in handy if you're using a bootcamp-partition too:

Paragon NTFS for Mac ($39):
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
read & write your data stored on NTFS with OSX

Paragon CampTune for Mac (free prerelease):
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/camptune/
resize your Windows- & Mac-partitions (can't use it to create a Windows-partition, just resizing - I think)

Paragon Rescue Kit for Mac (free prerelease):
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-mac/

Although I didn't need any of these programs yet, I downloaded and burned the isos. You never know. Also because it says it will be free only while beta-testing. So better get these things now

Alright, I keep on posting information about bootcamp-related issues in this topic. Feel free to add your stuff

ok, update time:

After many issues (it took me like 15 hours...) I finally got my partition resized so I could install Windows. The reason it wouldn't let me resize my Mac partition was that I stored some sparsefiles (protected image) on that partition. After moving them to my external disk it finally worked.

Anyways, XP up & running now

Finally ready for betatesting
