Gift to my girlfriend - beginner DJ set

Postby Retedigei on 08 Dec 2015, 17:20

Hello everybody
My girlfriend said she would like a DJ set as a gift. She is not a DJ, it would be just for fun. I really have no idea on where to start from to decide what to buy. She already has laptop, headphones and speakers, what other kind of equipment she would need? Do you think I can afford to buy affordable basic equipment with about 400 USD?
Thanks

The budget helps to ask some more questions....
Trying to get there in steps, so if you don't understand something just ask; then we now where to provide more info instead of making it a long if then else suggestion...

- Home or mobile DJ
- Video Yes/No/Maybe
- DVS (using vinyl and or CD) or only MIDI (= to be able to use a controller) and or HID

Basic would be to have a MIDI controller. Using a 'Pro' model, which means a soundcard is included which is usually the best way.

Could you also tell if used product is optional for you... means a 'better' can be adviced for the amount; with some risk as any 2nd hand.

Soundcard not available/working? Try the 32bit version of Cross (is also installed).

1) Home or mobile --> do not know. I would say mobile, since it might happen to visit friends and bring the DJ set
2) Video: Probably no, unless it is still possible to buy acceptable video equipment with the same budget
3) Only MIDI
4) Second hand: I can consider it

 well lets start her on her way ,,
suggest you get her to download Cross free ,, beginer software but has funcions of pro software ,, set up for a trail/get the feel of the software ,,
next would be to give info as to her computer and its specs ,,that will determine if she would be capable of running video,,
next get on line and look at MIDI controllers , as rojec said a controller with sound card ,,will be the way to go,,ease of hook up and ability to control sooftware other than keyboard and mouse ,, ,,and ease of useing the monitoring section to cue music ,,
then go to a DJ shop,,guitar/music store and try to demo the controllers ,,
will post the link for software comparision and features ,
, http://www.mixvibes.com/products/crosscross-dj-macpc
when you get to this point you will have a thousands
 :?: :?:
bring then to us ,,glad to help ,,

No need to blow your budget. Pick up a Numark Mixtrack Pro 2 (not the 3), and a copy of Cross DJ (the middle, orange one). That will come with everything you need. Just add headphones and an amp to play out of. And MP3s.

An other option that is natively supported by MV is the Pioneer ddj-sb and this will even work with a tablet or smartphone ;) and you'll find these units secondhand.

I had a Numark mixtrack pro 2 for about a week and sold it cuz i didn't find it as intuitive as my reloop beatmix2. I personally found the beatmix2 way easier to use then the Numark mixtrack pro 2 but this is just personal ;) Don't buy the beatmix 2 cuz it isn't natively supported by MV !!

The only reason i bought the Numark was that it's being natively supported by MV Cross DJ, so before you buy check if it's natively supported by the software so that you only have too plug it in and start the party

I recently started bedroom djing myself, i bought a barely used secondhand reloop beatmix 2 for 120€ a Senheisser headphone 25€ and a laptopstand for 25€ i already had a laptop and a home cinema 5.1 laying around that i didnt used anymore so i used it as a 2.1 system. My total setup costed me 230€ software included ;)

Jus my 2cents

Unless you take them on the road, the 20-25 bucks Sennheiser HD201s are most definitely the budget friendliest option to get great sounding cans for DJ-ing for a ridiculously low price.

The Hercules range of Controllers are responsibly priced and have all the features you need to start out with ;)

Also a few of them have native support with in Cross/CrossDJ
