Recommendations on recording?

Postby Okidoki_Sir on 14 May 2014, 10:09

Hey there,

I have been using CrossDJ for about 2 weeks now and love it so far. But there is one thing that really drives me mad: I just can't figure out how to get the volume of my recorded sets right.

I usually have the master gain at about 70%, so that it rarely peaks into the red area. This causes my recordings to be way too silent. But if I turn the gain to 100% I experience heavy clipping.

Also: The tracks differ in volume. Is there a way to turn on "Auto gain" or something similar?

What settings do you use to record?

depending which version have you tried the limit function in 3.1 its in the preferences and earlier versions its on the gui ,,
assuming you are using the record function,,if not describe how you are recording ,, might be the cause

I use the build in record function.

Do I have to analyze them before I play them? I thought putting them into the player automatically analyses them :o so this is not the case?

And what do you mean by "the levels have been adjusted"?

What is this limit function exactly called?

 take time to anyalsie your collection ,, click a track ,,,cntrl/a selects all and anylise ,, saves time and problems when loading a track ,, when you anylise one of the choices is gain ,, me i just select all,
in different versions there is a limiter ,, in 3.1 its in the preferences tab ,, have to check which tab ,, enable this and see if this helps

:?: what Cross fader curve are you using

Okay, so what exactly does the limiter do? I enabled this option and messed around with the volumes a little to experiment.

When I set the master gain to 100% I still experience heavy clipping. The recording has a good volume though.

When I set the master gain to 70% everything is fine, as long as I do not turn any other gain knob to >50%. The recording is too silent though.

How do you record? Do you use an external device?

The limiter cuts the peaks (avoid clipping)...
Setting master to max should provide line-level output.
You should always use limiter to avoid output problems, unless you have a specific need not to use it. You will know when you have this (e.g. genre).
Peaks in recordings can be caused by problems with CPU and/or writing speed when recording.

What are your recording settings (which input, which filetype to)

Is it only audio, or also vid you are recording.
What is the speed and remaining cap. of the hdd you are using (hdd or external)
do you have audio cache in General set to max? (if not you have a lot of read activity while writing)
Can you exclude the destination form AV software.
(was writing while Daniel posted; seems like we ask the same in different words..)

 thats not a bad thing
 seems to me the issue is not in the recording but in your sound out put ,, more info on that aspect of your set up ,,
my set up i can keep the track faders at 100% and the output gain at 90 to 100% with out clipping ,, the eq set to mid point ,,
so at this stage need info to see where the fault lies
