Musical structure for a versatile evening

Postby Idan Korenblum on 21 Apr 2014, 16:25

Hey, soon I'm playing in a private party, basically it's a all-the-styles party. Oldies, rock, pop, electro, some dubstep, hip hop. The population is very diverse and there is no main theme for the evening, it's not night club, just a private party in a dance bar for a group of people.

I am wondering how to plan this. My original program was to start with downtempo lounge music until some people get there, then to go to some oldies and jumpy happy familiar songs to get people dancing, then hip hop when everybody is already on the dancefloor, and then electro and pop hits remixes in the climax, some rock (greenday, blink 182) in the middle and finishing with some hardcore electronic, or maybe with some funny songs.

The thing is, BPM-wise, it's going from low bpm (lounge) to high (80s) then back to low (hip hop) then back to high (electro).

Do you think it's better to put the hip hop part in the start, and only then the oldies? It's just that the hip hop has more vibes of "yeah baby, party's here", then the oldies have more easygoing vibes.

So what do you say? Just keep the bpm from low to high gradually, or to go according to the vibes, and put the hip hop more closer to the party's climax, eveb if it means more fluctuation in bpm ?

Basically what you did is it. Prepare and adapt to the situation.

Do people arrive fresh from home. Did they have some drinks. Did they have a boring presentation. Did they have a 10 course meal.... instant adapt.
Don't hesitate to go to next track if the track is received different than intended. Always have some tracks with different feel in your prep list.

Use your eyes to listen to the public. Try to avoid silence unless planned and make clean transitions ...

KEEP SMILING WHATEVER HAPPENS.

One to consider is some slow dance for couples (to be)

I agree with RoJec!

One thing I like to do when playing for a diverse crowd is to mix up genres as much as possible from song to song. It can lead to some great sounding mashups, and will help keep people dancing no matter what their music preference.

the mechanics of mixing,,is pretty stright foward ,, practice makes perfect  the personality of a dee jay takes time ,,add your personality ,,the love of music and the skills you work at ,, show the crowd you enjoy your music ,, and they will respond  no set parameter other than having avaible choices ,,different genre and songs ,, dont get frustrated if the mixes dont come off perfect ,,keep a postive attitude ,, the crowd will reflect off that  dont be shaken by taking request ,, some times they go where the crowd wants then to go which gives you different possibilities  and dont worry about hiding your track info ,,being asked a track name is a compliment that you have the intrest of the audience  ,,lastly ,,have fun ,,
