Postby dj_cross_fade on 10 Jan 2013, 21:14

there is going to be a so much better support for gear some with my 2ed fav os Ubuntu cause of valve steambox . i seen how it looks like it is small
so many usb plugs i can see my self djing with it and you can upgrade it just like a PC.

do you guys think that more hardware out there that supports Ubuntu
cause of this. do you see your self jumping ship to the free os Ubuntu.
they do need to be is abit more user friendly and wine needs to work better. they or making a program for Ubuntu that will run mac programs what do you guys think of it all.

a thing that i have seen is that this os fast
faster then mac (which is based off Linux) and windows 8)

i have it running on my 10 year old PC that i use to record with

i know the steam box is for gaming but i think that some of us may end up djing with the thing i know i would

Nope

Yeah, could not believe how much of them, 8 (4 of USB 3.0) and another 4 as eSATA combo.

First of: there is a lot of hardware supported by Linux. That one which is not is very often due to restrictions or the fact that i.e. NVIDIA is closed source. It is hard to reverse engineer to code a good open source driver.
I am already linux user, fedora, after Ubuntu pissed me off with their Amazon search, and I am completely happy with it. As I have written so many times: the only software missing on Linux is Cross. There is mixxx which works, but I love Cross!

No way! If you are using Linux for running win software you have not understood a thing - sry mate...

Both are based on Unix?!

With Ubuntu? Which one? 9.04? What computer specs? Ubuntu 2D mode?

Actually...

Linux is a unique product designed to provide an environment similar to unix, but isn't Unix.

Mac OS X is actually based on NeXTSTEP which has some underpinnings based on the FreeBSD and NetBSD. NeXTSTEP was NeXT's OS and was later called OPENSTEP. When Jobs went back to Apple and Apple later bought Next - they used that as the basis for their next OS (OS X).

The Darwin core of OS X is also used in iOS devices. ;)

Almost forgot.

There have been multiple attempts to 'mainstream' linux - all of which have failed at this point.

Lindows, netbooks with Linux based OS's, you name it. Linux remains an 'experimenters' or 'hackers' OS and the general public just want something that 'works'. It's a big reason why Apple products are so incredibly popular - the out of box experience and the fact that (for the most part) the products just 'work'.

Linux is out there but it's buried at this point in many products. For example, Numark came out with the D2 Director media player. It's underpinnings are Linux based and the player works quite well. I still have and use mine pretty regularly. But that Linux base is hidden from the end user. The average person would never know that Linux was the basis of that product.

I think we'll see more and more Linux based products where they're purpose built but not where the end user really 'knows' it's a Linux based product.

Admittedly, a purpose built computer that booted directly into a full featured DVS would be pretty nice. :) It would remove a lot of the 'crap' that we see on most computers that deal with incompatibilities, etc. Although, to be honest, that was 'sort of' the case with one of the first DVS products which was built on Linux and required a specific model of Sony laptop to work properly (Traktor Scratch with the old hockey puck interface).

Actually, there's already an Audio specific build of Linux. ;) Actually, more than one. :D

AV Linux for example...

Or Tango Studio...

I looked into them a while back, but I'm too busy to do as much of the research, etc as I'd like to. Too busy managing networks, phone systems, and servers at the day job so it's often one of the last things I want to do when I get home and start working on the DJ business side of things...

Hmmm... USB3 was mentioned there somewhere... the only device I've found that uses it, is my external HD... it's fast - extremely fast, but it will take ages for everything else to catch up.

I'm a big Linux fan, especially Ubuntu and Linux Mint, but until the people involved can get a single, unified sound system together, it will never be good enough for live music.

As I see it, Linux has too many diverse developers, and consequently, too many ideas about what should be the standard.

In theory, I love the idea of Linux, but the people involved should stop trying to be individual, and pull together, and create properly defined standards. Only then can developers create stuff that we can use.

Diversity is always a good thing, but sometimes we need a rigid platform to build upon. If the Linux developers decided to use just ONE sound system, then we would see real progress...
Summer is here! Only 4 things we need - cold beer, hot ladies, loud music, and more cold beer!

The idea of Steambox is that it provides a standard platfrom just like a Gaming console, like Xbox 360, or the playstations: You do have to develope to that specific console! And seeing that how powerful and upgradable Steambox is, it is very good. VEEERY GOOD!

It does not run a lot of crap, just Steam (Valve's game manager and store, the biggest in the world), and seeing it in a small package it is awsome.

It can be a powerplant for a DJ software, and seeing the stuff, it can be ideal for video mixing as well...

We'll see how it goes!
