Whoa! Now you're going back into history! Imagine trying to scratch and mix if the cylinder recordings stayed popular, instead of the discs that came after?

I think it would be interesting to say the least. :D

But at the same time, I think the real problem would be cueing and moving between cylinders and how long it takes.

The REAL issue would have been hauling all those cylinders! Could you imagine needing to play a 5-6 hour long event with all your songs 3 minutes long or less? That's 20 songs an hour, 6 hours, 120 songs at a MINIMUM! Now imagine taking even 200 cylinders - all fragile as hell. ;)

BTW, if you want to learn how important song choice is try doing an event or two on real vinyl. ;)

Been there, done that! When I first started out as a DJ, vinyl was all I had - the boxes of 12" and 7" records used to weigh a ton! To do parties I used to take 2 boxes of 7" singles (about 300 in each box), and 3-4 boxes of albums and 12" singles.

Just imagine doing that with cylinders! That would be near-impossible!  You'd need one van for the gear, and another for the music!

  also in a time when the techonolgy limited you in options carried two tape deck with as perfect copies of practise mixes too use to get more song selections and variety,,the music you carried weighted as much as your equiptment ,,,milk crate of records weighed as least 25 to 30 pounds help crammed at least 45 to 50 albums or 12 "singles ,,didnt leave with out at least 4 to 6 drpending on the expected crowd   and if you didnt carry the crowds current favorite you couldnt get the party started

This is a good fact: As we've got older, the gear has got lighter...

I used to use milk crates too Daniel, those things were so heavy!

The father of my best pal, showed me a Technics DJ tape player. It was amazing to see such stuff.
