How to choose the right headset?

Postby Matarael on 07 May 2012, 16:28

Hello, Matarael here.
So last month my headset got broken when someone tried to steal it from me in the street :s
Mixing without it is possible, but really hard for trying new stuff, so i'm now looking for a new headset. I used to have a Beyer DT990, which is a studio headset. I really liked its sound, but i m now looking for a DJ headset, with a sound and quality close to the DT990. My budget is about 130 - 150 euros (maybe a little more if i find something really nice).
I am basically looking for advice on which one to choose, so any input would be appreciatted.

Mata.

Headphones, tough topic as it mainly depends or likes and headshape.

My Fav is the aiaiai tma-1 which came out just 2 years ago.
Can´t say anything bad about it after a year of use.

The sennheiser hd-25 is considered to be industry standard, and also excellent, but for me it was too tight around the ears.

If you wanna save some money you should try the stanton 2000, they sound fairly well and also are very comfortable, i used those for 3 years.

Hello J-kut, thank you for taking the time to answer me.

I just read some reviews about the TMA-1, and it seems really nice, except for 1 thing. The review says there's a hollow around 10khz, and i think this might be a problem as i m mixing mainly DnB and Dubstep, and i usually have to beef up highs, to make the snares more present. I usually feel there are enough basses (though my old DT990 had a little boost on lows and low mediums).

I'm trying to find a store where i could try these out, i think that's the best solution, but i don't know if they will allow me to.

I've had my Sennheiser HD 25's since 1999 and they are still going strong. They have had pretty heavy usage too.

I finally chose the senheiser, very nice sound so far, but as J-kut said, a bit tight around the ears. It seems more comfortable with the velvet earrings rather than the leather ones though. I'll tell you in a week or so.
Thanks mixvibes community for your input, it's nice to always have someone to answer you :)

yep, I switched to the velvet earrings (only thing I've ever had to replace), You'll get a lot of mileage out of those.

Very wise choice ;)

I've had my HD25 SP1's since '98 and they've never let me down.

I've had to replace the cable once and the ear padding a few times but other than that they've been bloody marvelous.

Well worth the money mate ;)
