Cleaning contact points (urgent)

Postby indmix on 19 Sep 2011, 17:12

Hi guys
Need some quick help.
Would it be good to clean the contact points of my Stanton T60 with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution? I know that this may be used to clean the needle itself (using a Q-tip), but i was wondering if it would also work on the contact points
Thanks

Hey,

do you mean the connection cables between the cardrige and the tone arm? or the cinch connectors?
I have never cleaned any of my connector points (like cinch, xlr, klinke, cardrige cables and so on). They work very well.

So what exactly do you want to clean? normaly it will not bring more quality (if they are hard oxidized then it would be ok to clean them but this should normaly not be happen.

regards
Christian

I was talking about the cartridge contact points..They aren't oxidized, but i used to have the horrible habbit of licking the contact points when dirty, i know, i'm ashamed
Now when they get dirty i clean them gently with a rubber, but i was wondering if iso alc 70% would work better or not.

Hey,

ok at the contact pins it can work but you have to be careful because the isolation is plastic (often!). The alc is destructs the plastic and it will be porously and discolored.

I have a question why are your contact points dirty? are you using it at dirty and dusty locations or why? I have Stanton T.80 and I never cleaned any of the parts only the neadle with an brush to get the dust bunnys of the neadle.

But if you are careful it should work because it is also elimating the fat from the contacts.

Christian

I think i'll leave the contact points the way they are.
The reason why i clean it is because it's second hand and the contact points weren't really perfect since the beginning. I think i'll stick to cleaning the needle only.
Thanks alot

I recommend you to use higher grade alcohol like 98% to clean the contacts and then use this.
