Don't Have a controller? Use the keyboard

Postby BennyB on 24 Aug 2011, 12:46

Ok, guys, just some Brief info, about Keyboard Jockeying, because, many people don't know, but it can help a lot, If you have a software and sounacard only config, along with - let's say - a two chanel mixer.

I'm about the make a comparison also. I'll compare Virtual DJ 7 Pro mapper usage againts Mixvibes software mapping, in general.

So let's start with, that, more than a year ago poor moneyless DzsoniB decided to get a Mixvibes U-Mix 44 soundcard, and a small basic 2 chanel mixer for cheap.
A month later, my friend heared about my stuff, and decided to gift me his VDJ account, and license after he switched to Traktor.

Virtual DJ 7 Pro is more advanced than his ancestors, and It can do 4 decks.

But trying out DVS LE, and Cross DJ later in Frankfurt, to go deep in keyboard mapping.

So first start with Mixvibes in General:

Mixvibes mappers are tough, but pretty useful stuff. High variety of functions, and need a little look up to find out which is which, but I liked it.
I started to use a standard QWERTZ keyboard mapping, and I little rearranged it.
It was important, to use, it, because, with VDJ it's more easy to mix without keyboard, but MixVibes products needs CDJ like techniques, to mix, so CUE, PlAY/PAUSE, and effect controll was useful to control with keys, more than with mouse.
But, Mixvibes was crying after a controller, and I really felt dumb with a keyboard, so I looked back to VDJ 7 Pro (I note here, that I was ammased by the sound quality of even DVS LE, so I slowly try to get back to it).

VDJ 7 Pro:

Ok, so what I learned in DVS LE, I transported them to VDJ, so I made my version of keyboard mapping, on VDJ.
On Virtual DJ I have 4 decks, 2 leftdecks, and 2 rightdecks. I can select decks.
I made 2 control sites on my keyboar, one for a leftdeck and one for a rightdeck. Each deck I can control the following thing by the keyboard.
3 band EG, encrase, decrease and kills. 4 hotcues/deck, PLAY/PAUSE, CUE, EFFECT ON/OFF, Loop ON/OFF half, double, pitch +/-, crossfader, and of course LOAD tracks.

With this config, I have a leftdeckside, and a rightdeckside on my keyboard, I can use leftdeck controls for deck 1 and 3, and the rightdeck controls for 2, and 4. (But I usually mix with 2 decks).

The Feeling:

Tapping on the buttons, and using qiuck move for mixing, is quite a good, thing, and you can get satisfied. I'm getting better and better, and my mixes are more stable than ever.
These things makes you mix with your ears, since you don't have to buzz around with one single mouse, and I can quickdrop in tracks with hotcues. So it's Ultimate fun. And It's one step away from a controller.
So anyone who mixes without controller, try to go deep inside mapping, and If you need help, feel free to ask, because it never hurts :D

I'M using VDJ to get used to the controls, but I'm slowly trying to get DVS LE known a little bit, more, and of course getting a full version Software for example Cross. And I'Ll let you know how am I done with that.

And buttom note: For both softwares, I'm using U-Mix 44 in a different way, where output 1&2 are the master, output 3&4 are the headphone outs. The mixer is used, for level setting, and main output EQ-ing and as a record source, and with it's cue crossfader, track syncing.

Thak you! I really wanna see how Cross works, so i think I will not go on the "traditional" - get the controller and software with it - way.

I also wanna get a U-Mix Control 2, and map it up with VDJ, and see what comes next:D And later I can get the Mixvibes SW if I can afford.

The big thing in this, I that, I can combo use the controller, along with the keyboard, and I can map the U-Mix Control 2 for all 4 decks:D
It's seems wicked If you think about it:D
