Time for a new PC I think, build one or buy one?

I've been thinking about replacing my 4 year old PC with a new one.

I'm not looking for anything special or super fast, just a something I can do all my converting, downloading, tagging, testing and web browsing on for example.

Now, I like the idea of building one, but is it just as cheap to buy one nowadays.

I agree with wazza and you can choose hardware which fits the requirements of what you want to do with the computer.

i agree with build one had mine built and very proud. didnt have enuff info about the tech side to do it my self ,but tried to get what i wanted /needed to get the performance to at least not be outdated as fast still happy and proud of it

Just to let you know who has commented on this thread that I've decided to build myself one.

It will be the first time I've built a PC. In the past I have changed Hard drives, Ram, Sound and graphics cards so I think if I take my time I'll be OK. Well, I hope so

I have bought a new machine too. It is a custom build desktop by a internet company. They have tons of machines prebuild with a lot of different hardware inside. It is as if you have build your own machine because they offer nearly every combination. So I bought this awesome beast:

It is "just" for surfing, office and studying - truely a bit oversized, but it is worth buying it when thinking of the future

not to dissawade you .point of info i had mine built to the best spec i could afford by a computer company (localy) never delved that deep into changing out hard drives and things not that computer savy ,what steve suggest seem to be the best of both worlds

just peeked at steves link yeah that a beast 8gigs of ram, can win 7 use all of that

Yeah, as long as its 64-bit it can.
But for more than 16gb Ram you´ll need Win7Pro or Ultimate.

Bit late to the party on this one, but what kind of budget are you working to? Only asking as I've built a few PC's (including the one I'm writing this on) and am more than happy to help with specs, etc if I know what you've got to spend?

Don't know what your size/space requirements are, but my desktop is a Mini ITX system and if you want something compact and silent, but still powerful enough for everyday tasks then I'm a big believer in that being the way to go! It fits on a shelf, breezes through "normal" tasks and is still powerful enough to run Cross DJ without any issues.
