Hard disk space, cheap as anything nowadays

Postby Jim B on 05 Nov 2010, 14:24

I can't believe the price of hard drive space is nowadays.

I've just gone out and sent £65 on a Western Digital 1TB external hard drive, this will be more than enough for me. 5 years ago I paid £100 just for a 120gig drive!!!!

This is the one I've brought this morning

I'm in the process now of backing up all my music files now :)

Luckily the hard discs are cheap. Bought a 1tb hard disc and had some issues with the search time while djing. Had 17000 songs on the disc and when I would hit load, and the screen would freeze sometimes longer then I would want. I went and got a 500 GB hard drive and the freezing stopped. I think the problem was just to much disc to look through. Although I never lost a beat and after the song loaded everything went back to normal, I like continuous flow. Mixvibes is the best. Been using it for 10 years and virtually have had no problems. I just ordered a new Vfx controller and can't wait.

I'm gonna jump in this thread, if y'all don't mind! I need some help: my laptop's gotten 2 the point that it can't handle the amount of music I have on it. I now have a ClickFree BackUp external hard drive & I have backed up all my music. Here's my question- if I delete all of my music off of my laptop, will iTunes still recognize my music files & keep my playlists in order through the connected external hard drive? I have an event tomorrow night for New Years & MixVibes just started skipping the track playing while I was uploading the next track earlier today- it's the first time this has happened in the 9 months I've used MixVibes. I'm pretty sure it did this because of all the music that's slowing my laptop's processor down, but I'm scared to death of deleting the music off it! Can anybody help me out with some info?!? Please & thank you!

I don't think that all the music on your harddisk slows down the computer. It is just data, nothing that creates additional storage that is used.
If you are deleting your whole music from the internal harddisk these files are gone and your software can not access it anymore. Even if you have the exact folder structure on your external harddisk the software won't recognized nor replace it. You have to import the music from your external harddisk in your software, analyse it and then you will be happy again I guess ;)

Make sure you update iTunes and tell it the new path to where the files are now located and can be found.

Thanks 4 the help fellas! I'm still not sure what 2 do tho. I spent the wknd searching for options & have been told both: 1) removing the music files off of my laptop will not make a difference on how fast MixVibes performs & reacts, 2) using an external hard drive does work, but I need 2 find one w/ a fast processor... I'm completely confused! I'm aware that I'm gonna need 2 get a new laptop soon, but I need a cheaper alternative until I can afford that kind of investment (about 4-6 months).
Is it possible that MixVibes just doesn't respond quickly to scratching? My main issue is that MixVibes doesn't catch the first "cut-in", which throws off the timing entirely! I've just assumed that the problem is the large amount of music on my laptop slowing down it's performance, but that's been refuted.

Have you optimated your computer for audio software? If not then try this:

Steve's advice is good, also is worth trying to adjust and experiment with your ASIO buffer size, in your sound card control panel.

You might have it set to high making the software seem slow on reacting to your movements. Try reducing the ASIO buffer in stages and see how the software reacts then. If you go too low then you will get audio problems.

I have mine set at 128 samples (2.9m/s) and Cross feels perfect to me, I'm no scratch DJ ;) but I still believe this is very good :)

As for External hard drives, I'm a great fan of them, some people may not be, but I am. It's all down to personal preference. Filling you internal hard drive with music files (and general clutter) does slow your laptop/PC down, but that is just my personal opinion.
Some will argue differently, but that just me ;)

I have always worked with a external hard drive and I like to keep my music files separate from my software, which keeps my gig'ing laptop free of clutter. Apart from my OS (and files relating too it) all I have on is my DJ software.

Also with hard disk space being so cheap nowadays I think it's worth it :)
