Supported Meta Data Fields for MP3, FLAC, or WAV

Postby Eric Anastas on 25 Apr 2016, 01:59

Is there any official documentation on what metadata fields are supported with the file formats that Cross can play? I'm about to spend some time organizing and tagging my library, and I would like to have a better understanding of what information is being added to the files, and what information is only being stored in the Cross collection database.

First most of my library is currently WAV files, and Cross does not seem to write any meta data to these files. With MP3 or FLAC after I edit the info of a track in Cross I can see the changes in Mp3Tag or TagScanner. With WAV files I do not see fields in the RIFF tag added or updated. Am I doing something wrong or is metadata just not supported with WAV files in Cross?

After doing some tests it looks like nearly all the track info entered into Cross is stored in the the ID3 tags of MP3 files. The only fields that did not seem to be stored in the MP3s are "Album Rating" and "Released".

It appears FLAC files are much more limited, and only store the fields listed below.

- Title
- Artist
- Genre
- Year
- Track Number
- Comments
- Album

Also it seems that Cross is able to read album art added to a file, but adding art through Cross does not write the image back to file. For example, I tried adding cover art to a file with TagScanner. Clicking "Reload All Tags" in Cross would then load the image from the file as the artwork. However, when I tried to add artwork to a track in Cross I did not see the same image added to the metadata of the file in Mp3Tag or TagScanner.

There is no documentation on how Cross modifies tags.

Having the habit to use a tag editor before adding to Cross usually is the easiest way.
I use MP3tag. One major advantage of an external editor is that you can create a set of common change tasks in one click.

You also have to be aware to have the write protection disabled.

Soundcard not available/working? Try the 32bit version of Cross (is also installed).

Thanks for the reply that makes sense.

I've been using Mp3Tag as well. What kind of common change tasks are using using Mp3Tag to do?
