I've been trying out Cross DJ Free (3.2.3) on Mac OS X and want to be able to cue upcoming songs in the headphones. I bought a splitter cable, and am trying to follow the instructions in the manual to set the Routing Mode to Split Mono, but this does not seem possible (ie. there is no Routing Mode dialog in the preferences).

I cannot find any indication anywhere in the documentation, site or boards that Cross DJ Free for Mac does not support using a splitter cable. It seems extremely odd that the Cross DJ Free for iOS and/or Android would support this, but not for Mac?

Can anyone confirm or offer a workaround?

It's not possible. Limitation of the free version. At the website it's clearly listed in the product comparison chart. It's like this for like a decade.

So no option for Cue in win/mac free version.

Wow, that's really unfortunate... that was the only feature that is actually important to me.

And this fact is really buried... I found the comparison sheet... it only indicates that "multiple routing modes" are feature of the paid versions... I assumed this would be for working with external mixers or sound inputs... nowhere else on the site or in the manual is it mentioned that splitter cables are not supported, not even on the page where Mixvibes sells their own cable!

It says that Cross DJ LE (which I guess I mistook this for Free) supports it; however the LE version isn't available for download or as an upgrade path...

With so many free apps on iOS offering this as a standard feature - including the ones from Cross! - it really surprises me that this crucial feature is disabled, while all the really advanced sampling and loop editing stuff is included... the one feature that actually makes it possible to use it for DJing!

Oh well, I guess I'll be shopping around for an alternative... too bad...

PS - the ability to upgrade to Cross DJ from within the program doesn't seem to be working either - I only get blank webpage with the following message:

"The advertiser is not active.
TradeDoubler"

PPS - might be nice if this routing mode feature (aka splitter cable and/or USB audio interface support) was available as an in-app purchase or add-on, like full video output ($11.99), rather than requiring an upgrade to the full software with a whole bunch of extra features I don't want or need.

I'll grant you that a non-working in-program upgrade link is not good. But hey, it isn't the end of the world buying it from the site either. Inconvenient? Yes. Insurmountable? Hardly.

I am afraid you are looking at this from the wrong angle.

Mixvibes Cross is a full-featured and serious DJ Software. One with the most excellent price/performance ratio (imho) at 49 euro/dollar for the full version.

In order to let people have a closer look at the software without first spending money, the people at Mixvibes have been so good to give you a no-controller, no-sound card, no splitter cable, "free" version to see if the features and look and feel are something you'd like.

It seems you are looking at computer programs as if they should have the same business model that tablet apps do. Unfortunately, they don't.

The other company that has a "Free" version, Virtual DJ, has the same limitations. No controllers, only standard sound, no sound routing can be set. Oh, and they "might" occasionally show advertising while you use it. Free, right?

as said as eloquently as always DJ vintage ,, matter of percepition what he wants is the Cross app for his mac/PC computer,,Cross free isnt this ,, as you said the free version was set up to give a feel for the software ,, mac/win os

not shure ,,never installed free version ,on computer ,, but if the free app for android mirrors the full version ,, then the free ver for win/mac should mirrow the crossdj ver ,,
so there are differences in the two versions,, meaning ie layout,,effects,x/y pads ,, also screen mangement ,, can go on

I hear where you're coming from. I think Cross is a really impressively slick and sophisticated program, well worth the price; but is is also with one with a lot more advanced features (video, sampling/looping/fx, etc.) than I'm likely to use. I'm just looking to do some simple, old-school (?) mixing & playing... Headphone cueing is really one of the only essential features. I appreciate being able to try out a free version, my only suggestion might be to have a upgrade/pricing model that lets people add on features as they need them. The advanced stuff could be limited in some way and unlocked as needed, but the really basic/useful stuff - at least equivalent to their $4 iPhone app - should be accessible without having to upgrade to the full $70 (CAD) version. Maybe a way to get to the LE version?

The other free softwares I've been trying out have their own limitations, either time, or hardware, or features, but so far it is only Cross DJ Free that disables headphone cueing, which frankly makes it pretty hard to get a feel for using the program to actually DJ. Even if this feature was only available for a limited time, one would at least be able to practice DJing a set or two and see how it feels. Also, making this limitation clearer in the product description, manual and/or FAQs would be helpful.

Anyhow, thanks again for your time, and I hope to eventually get good enough to merit the investment in a full version of Cross.

@DJ Vintage - Just a quick note of clarification, the free/demo versions of Virtual DJ 8, Serato Intro, AlgoRiddim djayPro* as well as the Traktor Demo*, all work perfectly with either a splitter cable or a USB audio interface, though the free versions do not support controllers. (*Traktor Demo supports controllers, but for only 30 minutes at a time; djayPro only works for 2 weeks).

cant disuade you ,, your perception it what its is ,, if you want to futher check out the software and its possibilities then MV has /have giving a free demo version,with time limitation and watermark for vid ,, the app is a slightly different version of the software ,, have you tried to download the free ver of the app software on your ps/mac ,,
Cross DJ by the price comparison is about $50,, you can keep it as basic as you want ,, the no use of the added features that you dont want will not affect the performance ,
no shure that this argument is going to disuade you in your thoughts but ,, we dont have the power to control buisness decisions of m v
love the software and feel my one time contrubition for its support and developement was well worth it ,,
intial expence $49 for home version 6 and a usb sound dogle ,,
up grade price $99 for Cross when version 1.25 was the free version ,,
been a mixvibes user since 2002 , got on the fourm when DVS version was updated to 7 2006 or so ,,

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a great software at a totally fair price. I was only trying to offer suggestions that might be helpful for encouraging new adopters - people just starting out and kicking the tires and deciding what platform to commit to (like me). E.g.: like enabling headphone support in the free/trial version - even if only via a splitter (which I don't think many serious pros would consider using anyways) - or making it a cheap add-in, separate from the advanced sampling/looping/routing/multi-deck or video features. Maybe someone up at MV will hear this and consider it. If I owned a good enough tablet I'd consider trying out the app, but I'm just trying to figure out what I can do with what I've got.
