More Filter Problems - Weird Gain/Distortion/Bass problem

Postby rhopkins on 12 Aug 2014, 09:58

I've re-created this both with my UMCP2 and with my controller disconnected and just using my mouse.

I play a track, start turning the filter from central to the right. Then I slowly turn the filter back to the left until it is central and no filter is applied - no light is on next to the filter dial.

At this point the track appears to be louder/bassier. If I click the turn filter light to switch it off completely, the track stays the same. On headphones the track is borderline distorting.

I've attached a screenshot of a track I recorded opened in Audacity to show the waveform. The highlighted area is where I turned the filter. Before and after are pretty much the same pattern, but notice more blue and the higher peaks on the right-hand side where the extra volume/bass is in place.

Here's another example, perhaps more obvious. This is when I first noticed whilst looking at the waveform in Audacity.

Same as before, you can see where I applied the filter. As it moved back into the central position suddenly a significant jump in bass and volume. Sounds crazy listening back now.

Why is this happening?

Disappointed to not get any acknowledgement from Support of this problem.

I've really appreciated all of your help in the past, Mixvibes Support people, but coupled with a slowness in response to my request for help when trying to get someone to buy a Mixvibes product on here and Twitter, and now this I'm feeling a little frustrated.

Hi rhopkins,

Sorry for the delay.

We are investigating and are trying first to reproduce it at our office.

Any change to the filter in 3.3 RC? Seems maybe better after a quick couple of minutes of playing......

There is no change except the 64 bits managment

is it possible that your problem comes from auto gain option or limiter ?

I think I've figured it out.

I checked my mapping for my UMCP2 and the mapping of the gain dials to the filters didn't have centre enabled.

I set that and it's not happening at all now. Seems the filter light would switch off to say that the filter wasn't applied, but it actually still was, very, very slightly adding that extra bass that was distorting tracks.

Acts as a warning to those mapping those filter dials.
