is it an interface design that when you select the search bar to look for a track that you lose control of the players keyboad shortcuts?

Yes it is. Else you wouldn't ne able to enter data without creating trouble as many commands are single key so yoi only need one hand to control.

There might be a command to exit search but will have to check.

Guess normally pressing enter does it
