Cross DJ 3.0 - User Manual!?!

Hello Mixvibes!

I purchased Cross DJ a few versions ago, but never really used it that much. I have since read a number of reviews on Cross 3.0 which has been GREAT! I thought it it time to give Traktor the kick and focus on Cross from now on (only natural since im running Pioneer kit)

I have found one user manual online, but it looks to be out of date.. Do you have one for Cross 3.0??? I'm REALLY keen on knowing this program inside out please!

Cheers

Marty

To my knowledge, the current manual hasn't been updated yet. Most of the stuff in the prior manual will still be applicable, however, MixVibes will still need to update the manual to reflect the changes made in 3.0.

Thanks for your quick response Phaidon,

I will print it out and have a read. The main thing I want to find out about is around the levels of the tracks. I did three mixes over the weekend. The frist was using the gains set similar to how I had them in traktor (using a DJM-900, external mixing, utilising it's internal sound card) I soon found the levels needed to be cranked right down. I then had Cross analyse my collection allowing it to check everything (gain, peak, beatgrid etc) except the Key (been using MIK for that). The next two mixes were ok, but I found when listening to them at work, a lot BOOMIER! than usual having kept to a similar mixing style/method.

I love how tight my CDJ's are now using Cross. I tend to use the sound card in my mixer rather than the CDJ's since it lets me play them at 96kHz, a noticeable difference than using the SCards in the CDJ's (Spent small fortune on Focal monitors / headphones etc), and Cross lets me do that using HID on the CDJ's which is ACE!

So here's my questions:

1. In your personal option how do you work with gains? Let the software go through the collection and adjust? Is there an option for it to adjust gains upon track load? Do you feel Cross does this well?

2. Does Cross write these gain values to the audio file or store it somewhere else when analysing each track? Im a bit worried it's now adjusted my collection which i share across programs.

3. Does Cross have any software EQ settings?

Im fully aware most people will just say, use your ears etc. I have gotten quite lazy having used Traktor for a while.. No matter what some tracks always need tweaking etc. And seeing my ears have had a beating over the years... they could do with all the help they can get!

Many thanks! Im determined to stick with Cross my mixes are so much tighter now, i just need to get onto of this new BOOM!

As for the Gain-issue, I dont know why, but Cross atm seems to be the only software that makes full usage of a soundcards output,

e.g. if I use a SL-Box or a Audio6 with Cross I have way higher output than with Scratch Live or Traktor, still without any distortion.

Don't ask me why that, it just is.
So yes, turning down the mixers gain is totally natural with Cross.

The Gain value itself is written to the track if you choose "save changes in tags" in the prefs afaik, but it is also saved in the analysis-files.

Using an external mixer there is no EQ in Cross, only if you used a midicontroller for internal mixing.

Thanks heaps for your responses guys.

I was thinking about that too Daniel. The selection of tracks were very varied I was trying out the Smart List generating option. Tracks in the mix were from all ages. Im going to try another mix using some new tunes I have recently mixed with using Traktor and see how it compares.

Thanks for your input Hannes, I will look into the preferences and keep an eye on the gains. Might turn them down a bit further & also check my master levels on the mixer. I can always amplify the mix using Audacity after it's done.

Here is the mix anyways, It has already been tweaked using Audacity.. So prob not a good representation of what I originally recorded.

Thank again guys!

 hate to suggest any workaround that might cause problems with work flow ,, if its not natural then it can become a problem ,, will listem to the mix ,, hope fully you can get things sorted to enjoy the software ,, no matter what keep making the music :!:
as far as the user manual ,,the progerssion of the software has out paced the manual up date ,, any :?: can be answered by user info and experiences ,,sad but thats the workaround we have come to accept ,, balanced by timely update of features ,,

Unless I overlooked, but think it was not mentioned that the track gain is a field in the collection. Right click on header of track rack and enable. It will shift between a knob or data field depending on mouse position.
Will be set/overwritten by Gain analyses (which you usually only do once before).
Not recommended to use to active unless you like to.
