I know there are many threads but there doesn't seem to be one with an overall judgement on this combination.

After my problems - viewtopic.php?f=358&t=28817 - I actually had to carry out a restore to factory default as despite how that thread ends the problem came back. However, a friend has an unused version of W8 and I'm tempted to move on to that.

What's the view on W8+Cross? A good combo or no different to W7?

Yes, in fact I do.
Think about the Metro-Surface what you will,Win8 still is the better performing OS.

The only issue you can run into are poorly adopted drivers. But you can't know without trying.

i've been using Cross + win8 for months. no issues at all

running Cross on a Win8 machine without any problems

It's gone very well for me. I notice an improvement in performance
