Recording format issues

Postby Luckie on 11 Dec 2012, 00:09

I'm trying to record my mixes, but my Mixvibes Cross-Discover DJ 1.3.2 only has the WAV, AIFF, OGG and FLAC audio format. I was hoping it would have the MP3 format...can anyone help?

Hmmm... methinks this was posted twice. ;) Once more in the General section.

You can also use Audacity and LAME to encode the file. It's multiplatform (works in Windows/Linux/Mac) and free. :)

MediaMonkey uses LAME IIRC. If you're on a PC and don't have MediaMonkey I can't recommend it enough. :)

Here's my post from the General section. I'm adding it here only because the other thread may be deleted. :)

Once you've recorded to one of those formats, you can always convert it to MP3.

I'd recommend using Audacity and the LAME encoder since it's Cross platform (windows/Mac/Linux) and free.

Just load the wave file, and then export to the bitrate you want the MP3 in.

FYI - One likely reason for this is that converting to MP3 requires purchasing a license for the Fraunhofer algorithm - which can be quite expensive. LAME isn't legal for distribution in all countries and while it creates MP3 compatible files, it's NOT an MP3 encoder (LAME actually stands for, "LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder"). I find the quality actually BETTER with LAME over Fraunhofer at the same bitrates....

But that's all technical stuff you probably didn't need to know but I find it cool anyway.

Thanks for the reply. Do you happen to have links to a few of sites that converts files to MP3? I still have my DJ mixes in wav and I would love to convert them. I see a few on Google, but not sure.

Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Info on using LAME with Audacity:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/help/fa ... i=lame-mp3

And the download site for LAME:
http://lame1.buanzo.com.ar/

Load WAV file, select File/Export - select MP3 as output type, set options (bit rate, etc), and export away! It really is that simple.
