My laptop isn't that old though. Is it really that under-specced?

That is not what I said.

You were in a field where you didn't have issues, you could have some but you didn't know or was far from them.
Now the field is narrower, so more chance to have these issues.

I'm not saying your computer is under powered, I'm saying something that was affordable in the past now isn't. (weak drivers, lake of optimization, or whatever).

Here is the changelog of the 2.1
- Improved general GUI and player title-header layout for clearer track info display
- Handling of the new full screen mode for OSX > 10.7 (LION), along with an updated layout and behavior of the menu bar
- New Hot Slicing Banks and Hot Chromatic Banks for more creativity using the integrated samplers
- Added 32 beats smart-seek value
- New 'Software Take-over' option on any slider/knob
- New Auxiliary stereo input for external recording
- Added the possibility to record sampler C and sampler D
- Assignation of the the keyboard’s spacebar to the "Collection view expansion" switch in default keyboard mappings
- New "Sample" track property (see "Set as Sample" in track contextual menu) to identify a track as a sample and easily filter samples from music
- New "All Samples" and "All Music" nodes filtering the tracks using the new "Sample" property
- Saving of the Playback mode and Roll Frequency in sample's properties
- Samples reordering and renaming directly in the pads
- Built-in MIDI mappings for Novation Twitch and Vestax VCI-380 controllers.

As you can see, nothing so special or hard to manage for an up to date computer. (Did you know that an i3 is slighty equal to an old C2D ?).
What really take my attention there is this :
Improved general GUI and player title-header layout for clearer track info display

it will only ask more to your GPU as we have changed the handling from some kind of bitmap to something more vectoriel.

I think it is the 3rd (or 4th) time we're talking of GPU into this thread.

It was not my intention to appear argumentative, I've got to the point where I hate my laptop already

I will supply that information tonight, I just don't have it to hand right now as I'm at work.

I will now solve the problem!

Behold!

Deinstall (if still on your laptop) Acer ePower Management, Intel RST and Realtek Audio Drivers.

Worked? Yay, see my magic

Didn´t work? Sorry

Done. Plus uninstalled the Intel Graphics driver. Not tested yet but will get back to you.

Intel Core i3 2310M 2.1GHz processor with 3MB L3 cache

A good cpu, that can do the work without a hassle.

Intel HD 3000

Only good for desktop appliction and movie but can do the work has was doing oldest GMA950.

The native screen resolution is 1366x768, so you should run this setting to not add load on the GPU.

HM65 Express chipset

If have seen some recall (from HP) with an issue on the SATA that could affect flow after Intel reveled that issue.

Check on the Acer website for latest drivers or BIOS upgrade.

Realtek HD Audio driver keeps re-installing whenever I restart my laptop. Except I don't think it's the most up to date one as during playing music on my laptop I get the occasional pop. It just shows back in Uninstall Programs.

Whilst nothing looks different after uninstalling the Intel display driver, the waveforms within Cross seem to scroll very slowly/in a blocky manner now. So not best pleased with that outcome, especially as...

...Neither of the above have made a difference to the audio problems within Cross and player loading.

There is a bios update that I'm downloading that only became available last month. It doesn't say what it fixes.

The Intel grafic driver is mandatory, butt the realtek driver reinstalling is very odd. Can you try from the device-manager?

Also immediately after deinstalling, locate the realtek folder and trash it.

Simply switch it off (deactivate) into the device manager. You won't have internal audio but only for testing... ;)

I've tested this, no difference. Still Cross freezes on player load and audio cutouts occur.

I don't think we're going to find the cause of this. My suspicions lie with the HDD and crap CPU.
