Thank you. Because actually you're checking within the OS explorer.

Ahhh, Thank you for clarifying. Ok I have Media Monkey which I purchased a while back and never used. I opened that program and imported my collection and picked a couple of tracks at random and updated their star ratings to 3 and 4. I then navigated to those tracks via windows explorer and the star ratings of the tracks had been changed to 3 and 4 respectively. So it appears that Media Monkey is able to update the ratings information of the original tracks but Cross is not.

to be clear im NOT looking for another program to edit my id3 tags. Theoretically I purchased a program that does that when I purchased Cross. What I want to know is does Cross do what the manual says it can do? Does it edit your id3 tags? Im sure there is someone out there that has used this function. Better yet, any one of you out there reading this, go into your collection and open up any track and edit the rating on it, change it to 5 stars, then close Cross and open either your OS's explorer or another id3 tag editor and navigate to that file. Whas the change made in that file? Does it say 5 stars now? I just want to know if this feature works or not so I dont spend any more time dicking with this program.

Hey,
With Cross 1.7.1 I used this feature some times but not to rate the file with stars I changed the names (some of the files I buy have first name and typ of mixing - club, electro and so on and after that the name of the mixing artists. I always switch them to see at the end of the file the mix typ.) so for me it works quite well but I have no idea why it will not work at your system. Maybe administrator and user right conflicts? And please check the files if they have more than one id3 tag version, if yes windows shows only one of them and this is a bit tricky sometimes the new and sometimes the old ones. I have also files they have in windows no id3 tag visible (all fields empty) and in Cross they looks okay all there (bought at DJ tunes).
So please check this and report us. I also tested this function in the beta everything a new version will be released so it should work.
Regards Christian

Yes it does. When you edit the tag into Cross, does MediaMonkey see it ?

Christian Thank you. Making some progress now, heres where we are: I open Cross, open my tracks folders, navigate to a new track, add that track to collection, analyze the track, then change the rating from zero to 5 stars. Close Cross, open Media Monkey, scan the library to add new tracks, navigate to the same track and YES media monkey sees the track as a 5 star track!! So indeed Cross is editing the tag information somewhere, it is just not visible to the OS explorer as support@mixvibes was suggesting. So problem solved there. HOWEVER, I have a new problem and maybe I need to search the boards before i post this but it seems relevant: I open Cross, navigate to the same 5 star track and delete it from the collection, I then navigate back to my files section, find the same track (now it only shows 1 star instead of 5), I then add this file to the collection, navigate to the collection, find the file NOW the file only has 1 star?? I then opened media monkey and removed the track from media monkey, and then re added it and it still showed the 5 star rating. So I conducted a few more tests using different files and different ratings and have concluded that Cross is able to write ratings data to track files but it incorrectly interprets all the ratings data that it has written and will change any star rating it has written to a one when adding to the collection or reading from the files section. Is this a known issue and is there a fix? Any suggestions? Thanks again for everyones assistance.

A stupid question maybe but why you import, rate it and remove it from the media list and reimport it? I have my mediabase since version 1.7.1 is released never edited in those ways only import new songs but never removed a file or so . But will check this and maybe it could be a problem. regards Christian

Not a stupid question Christian. Actually the reason all this came about was because one day I opened Cross and none of my tracks would play, it kept giving me a "cannot locate file or Missing file" error for every track in my collection. I thought no big deal, I'll jut reimport the collection because all the meta data is saved in the ID3 tags. When I did that it did import all the meta data but did not import the ratings which I had spent HOURS and HOURS applying to tracks. My initial experiments led me to believe that Cross was not writing to the ID3 tags of my tracks which is why the ratings where lost on re-importing. I now see that Cross does write to the id3 tags but is unable to read those tags correctly when/if it re-imports. I need to get this worked out before I spend another million hours rating songs only to have the collection malfunction and have to re-import losing all that rating data. Thanks for your question.

Okay this problem I never had because I have set my external device allways to the same path name. I will check this tomorrow when I'm at home where I have my music computer. And report here if I have the same problem it could be a issue.
