In preferences you can set to have a track load without autogain.

Except for some situations this usually isn't the best way.

The autogain feature is designed to have a similar volume for each track when loaded. In some situations the autogain is way off. This you can easily adjust. If you right click at the header of the collection grid you can make the autogain fader/value visible. Adjust the value once for a track and it is saved for all future use.

A common cause for a wrong calculated value is having long silence in a track.

So be aware that if the autogain is 0 for all tracks this will mean that you will have a lot of different volumes.... So every track load needs manual adjustment. This likely is the opposite of what you want, but tracks from different sources usually have different volume. Cross normalises this to line level.

It was, and imho still is, good practice to always manually gain your tracks. When it becomes a habit, you will automatically do that and never be caught off-guard. It is not uncommon to be using several various inputs (you may have vinyl next to your controller for example) in which case no amount of autogain is going to help you.

Also, most autogain algorithms are not very good. Notable exception is the one in Platinum Notes (by the people from Mixed in Key). I run all my tracks through PN before they end up in my collection.

While I still check my gains (it's a lifelong habit), I know that everything that comes out of my Cross program all has the same gain, so it will never differ very wildly.
