[MAC] Is this normal analysis behavior?

Postby DJ Vintage on 23 Jan 2015, 18:26

Hi,

Just something I noticed now. I usually drop stuff into Cross when I am done prepping it, run analyse beatgrid/bpm (key and gain already there through MiK and PN) and leave it.

I am rebuilding my core collection (starting to use iTunes for track management now) and have just imported my first 13 tracks in a new, clean Cross collection.

I select all (cmd-a), right click and select waveform/bpm only. The system starts to analyse. I wait for it to finish and drop the first track in the player.

Now the waveform appears almost immediately in the 'edit' part of the player window, but it's all white. Underneath where the entire track waveform is usually displayed a 'analysing' progress bar appears. When it's done (couple of seconds) the full track waveform appears in the appropriate deck color and the 'edit' waveform also changes to that color.

It thus appears that it re-analyses the track when you drop it into a player while it should already have done that.

Now I tested the following. I loaded each track into a player, one by one, waited for them to analyse, then reloaded the first track into a deck again (this track has now been analysed twice in the deck and once when batch analysed). And the same thing happens. 2nd track same result and so on.

Loaded a track in deck 1, waited for analysis to complete, loaded the same track in deck 2, instant waveforms.
Loaded a couple of other tracks in decks 1 and 2, then the first track again and again the analysis.

Ran all tracks through both decks again, closed Cross. Re-opened Cross, loaded a track, same analysis thing.

Copied some of the tracks from the iTunes media folder to a test folder on my desktop. Redid all the things above. No change. Tried it with Analyse All. Still no change.

My first conclusion would be that somehow the analysis information is not being saved. Is this possible? Is there something I need to change? Is this the normal behavior?

Looking forward to hearing your expert reply :-D

It might be you still use the old analysis folder.

A couple of versions ago there has been a change in naming of analysis files. Old sit is alike filename. New is long numerical.

On start Cross checks which ana files match with tracks. So ot might seem analyzed while new collection lacks info.

The lack of info can trigger analysis. ..

Maybe you can start a new analysis folder and see if you're issues disappear.

Note.. if you analyse an old style file it will be replaced by the new style.

Ok. Here's what seems to have been happening.

I have Journaled external hard drive that I keep my entire music collection on. It travels to my PC on occassion for transfer reasons and occasionally some editing. Rights on the drive are set correctly (R/W for me). For portability purpsoses I kept my collection files and other metadata on the external disk too.

I renamed the old Peak File to - OLD and created a new one. Opened Cross and ran the analysis. Checked the new folder nothing.

Went to my local (SSD) drive, created a new Peak File folder in Music/Mixvibes and set the path in preferences. Ran analysis. Numerical files showed up!
Dropped tracks in player, presto!

So, clearly some kind of rights issue (without an error report). Somehow it wouldn't write to the peak file folder on the external drive (while I COULD manipulate it from Finder).

Guess I will go in and create a new external drive which is MAC only, no hooking it up to my PC anymore. See if that works then.

Thanks for the help, folks!

Have seen topics on this issue. PC and mac aren't exchanged just like that with respect to external hdd.
Guess your solution is most reliable and cost effective.

An older track that was analized in previous versions may not have the peak information. In that case you will need to re-analize those for peak only. This is what adds the colors to the waveform.

If you have a new track and only analize for BPM and beatgrid as you mentioned that file is still missing the waveform color information. So when you load it it displays all white and the deck re-analizes for peak in order to display the waveform correctly.

On new tracks analize for BPM, beatgrid and peaks and that should take care of it.

Hi,

Thanks all for the help. I took a new external hard drive, prepped it for Mac Journaled and copied over the Cross Metadata (empty peak files folder), including the collections and the music folder.

Did a file relocation action which worked fine.

Ran analysis on a few files, checked if the new files appeared in the peak files folders, which they did and now re-analysing the bunch.

So, back on track. Again thank you to everyone for helping out here.
