Rekordbox capabilities are rapidly increasing and moving forward.
Based on my observations of the release rate they seem to be in a cycle of 2 weeks development sprints with regular releases every 2 sprints. That puts their cycle at middle of the month for bug fixes and end of the month for new capabilities. In fact moving very fast.
In addition, all the R series controller work with Rekordbox out of the box and with Serato with a small setup change stated in their manual.
Lastly, the R series controller seems to be ahead of the tech curve (at least one generation ahead) than that of the equivalent S series and when looking under the hood they have more MIDI capable hardware and the S series. (More hardware based MIDI addresses and multiole parameter LED)
Taking it all in consideration it makes sense (at least to me) to go for an R series controller in order to cover all the bases as Rekordbox becomes more capable.
