Switching from Torq 2.03 to another DJ software

Postby Diskized on 24 Sep 2013, 21:17

Hello everyone!

I have been a Avid Torq user for around a year now. Unfortunately around July, Avid announced that they had sold Torq to InMusic and since then Torq has been dead  it's very annoying since I enjoyed the way torq worked and felt.

Now I am on the hunt for a new software and I came upon Cross and I've got to say, it looks a lot like torq and like traktor (traktor was pretty cool but very complicated). I am curious as to what software I should use or if I should just stick to my dead Torq..

My next question is about controller comparability with Cross. I own the Torq Xponent (hence why I use torq) and for the most part it's a decent beginning controller. I'm curious if my controller would work with Cross and also if someone has attempted to or has a mapping for the Xponent.

This is my first post here so thanks all and I look forward to trying out this program!

Hi, and welcome to the forum,

There are a couple of guys on this forum that I know of who are ex Torq users, FigDJ (our newest Moderator) and MusicMeister.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that MusicMeister did map his Xponent for Cross. I haven't seen him around lately but you could always PM him and see if he did or not ;)

In the meantime you could try the free version of CrossDJ to get a feel of it and see if you like it.

I used to love Torq and in some respects Torq 2.03 still have features that have not been emulated by any software. However, a DJ software is nothing without support and that is where Torq is now.

When I switched over to Cross "I almost fell out of my studio chair" when I experienced the difference in the support and moving forward features of Mixvibes CrossDJ.

I have to say that the snap feature and the FX chaining of Torq were incredible. Nevertheless, Cross surpassed Torq in all other areas, like the sampler, sound quality, stability, track collection, database features, integration with iTunes, album art, search capabilities, key detection, and I could go on and on.

Given the great response from Mixvibes to keep improving, I am extremely confident that FX will be improved and that a "snap" like feature will be implemented. As far as beat grid features Cross is the closest to Torq I ever found. I spent months researching DJ software solutions until I found Cross. Let me tell you should dive right on and into Mixvibes Cross/CrossDJ you won't be disappointed.

Musicmeister (who I know from the old Torq DJ forum) did map the Xponent to Cross but I think it was in an older version of Cross. I can work on a new updated map for the Xponent that works with the current version of Cross.

Hope to see you as a new member.
Cheers

Thank you both for the feedback! I do have to say that I love Torq and I still dont know all of the features yet still!

I just downloaded Cross now so I shall give it a run through and let you know how it goes!

FigDJ that would be awesome if you could make an up to date mapping for me! I would greatly appreciate it just because Im still fairly new to my controller and Im brand new to Cross haha!

Thanks again for the warm welcome! That has definitely made a great first impression on Cross.

So here are my first opinions on Cross (and please correct me if i am wrong because remember Im trying it without a controller and Ive only tinkered with it for about an hour)

First off I like the way it looks, it was very easy for me to start and get a song going.

Second, the 3 effects that are in the free version are quite nice (no clipping and high quality) but it also brings forth my first complaint. As far as I could see you can only have one effect per deck at one time. Sure you can program the fx2 to work with channel A or B but I liked the way how in Torq I can have 4 effects and a VST per Channel.

The way the beat grid worked was a little confusing for me too. When I loaded in a song and had it analyzed, it did not seem to sync to the downbeat or any other beats for that matter. Maybe I have a setting wrong.

The other thing was cue points. From what I could see it looks like there are only 4 (on a demo song I saw 8 but im not sure how to access the other 4). One thing I did like was the ability to name your cue points. That could come in real handy.

I like the key detection (something Torq never had) and the pitch/speed slider. Very similar to torq and thats why I liked it.

The whole seek thing that is in Cross is a little weird and im not sure if I would be using that very much.

Im sure once I could use a controller with Cross I would be a bit more optimistic about the program. Please correct me on anything I have said and remember these are my first shallow opinions of the product. Also please inform me of any features that I can turn on/off that would enhance my judging of the software. Thanks again! :)

Ok so I've been playing around with Cross a bit more and I have one big complaint. I like to be able to watch my waveforms so I can drop in cue point. Unfortunately the waveform seems to be a few milliseconds ahead of the actuall time of the song. Maybe I have a setting on or something but I really don't like this. I like to be able to use the waveform view and watch the beats as they happen so hopefully there is a solution to this.

So unfortunately it seems to be that I need to have full access to the sync zone to turn off the snap feature which I dont think you can access in Cross DJ Free. Also I wanted to know if there is a controller that would work nicely for Cross DJ. I would like something that has 4 decks (volume and faders only). Lastly, if there is anything else that is noteworthy about Cross DJ that I should know then tell me because I am still on the fence about the program. Thanks Again!
