The "Thrill" factor aka.: Young kids with VDJ

Postby BennyB on 07 Feb 2013, 11:01

I had a "gig" last week, in the school my Mom theaches in. It's a primary school and the classes from 6 to 8 (12-14 year-olds) had a carnival type of thing, so my mum organised me in, as a DJ to handle only a half-hour dancing part, and my controllerist routine mashing up Gungnum Style.

I'll list 2-3 thrilling surprises:

- They swore a lot. One of them had a bunch of big ones, and I had enough of it, so when he said something like "F***in' good!" I corrected him to "very good".
- They are attracted to gadgets. The 12 year-olds actually could use the whole sound sytem there (2 Mackie active speakers, one 16/32 ch mixer, a PC runnin VDJ home, and touch-controled light console with a bunch of lights.)
They helped the technitian guy set it up, the handeled eveything technical throughout the night, I was ammazed, and thrilled, like "This is ain't a smartphone, this is a damn sound system."
- They didn't DJ good, I tought them some trick, but using those, they cought up (using VDJ without the keyboard is like jerking off with sandpaper, but somehow managed that). I nearly got in tears from the ammasement how well they know the stuff, I saw myself in them, however I started this stuff when I was 18 Y-O, so they had 6 years advance.

Something turned me: If those guys had the curiosity, let them have more, to see into DJing in a good way, to get hands on sume good equipment, to see WTF is going on out there.

So here Is an Idea that I want:
I will make a DJ and sound tech day in that school, meaning I and the technitian guy will set up the sound system, and my DJ stuff, and I will show them teach them, and let them try, mixing, DJing, and hadling stuff, and giving them tips for what to start with.
I think it's a good way to inspire them to become more, or just make them realise how hard stuff is.

BTW: I didn't mention that that school was MY primary school. The teacher's know me, and everyone is so proud. It was 9 years ago, when I left it, and I'm happy I can help.

So, what do you think?

Gave me a good laugh :D

I think its nice to help those kids to express their creativity through music. So thumps up for your plan. The young kids are our future! Nowadays i regret that i didn't start earlier with producing music and/or DJing (my damn gaming youth ;) )
So for me its kind of shocking to see that a lot of the upcoming producers/djs are a lot younger than me (i'm 25)

What an amazing idea! The kids will love that, and I'm sure that you'll enjoy it too. :D

I'm sure you'll be a great inspiration to them. ;)

Well, my Mom is a teacher in that school, and she advised me not to do that there.

I agree with her. She can get me free places to this first hand, and I can make the flyers and posters to put them in schools.

about the videoing stuff: I'm hungarian :D And if will sound funny, you won't understand nothin' from it.... and no I will not subtitle anything :D
