The "Decks" Factor or Britain's Got Turntables

Postby Lottie S on 25 Mar 2012, 17:49

Probably quite old news now, but what is everyone's thoughts on the rumoured new DJ talent show from Simon Cowell? Good idea or will it be an embarrassing farce? Your thoughts???

Well... I have Mixed feelings about this.

Can be good, because it can show people that DJ-ing is not as easy as it seems.

But can cause the opposite.

Can bring young guys to the spotlight, but can be a fail-stream too...

To me it is the same as for alle the other "{enter your country here} idols" or "{anybody} got talent" series. People get casted without knowing what they are doing. They are just (!) doing it for the fame and this, speaking for myself, is the absolute wrong start! Making music because of fame is cheating your "fans" and friends from the beginning! Music comes from the heart!

Speaking for electronic music in general it will always be connected to dark rooms with strange people taking drugs. No show in this world will change this mind and the cliche! Sad but true!
Viele Grüße,
Cheers,
A plus,
Steve

IMHO it's a crazy idea that will never work! Being a DJ is great for most of us, and we deal with it in our own way - we choose our gigs and perform to our abilities, and I'm guessing that most of us are very happy with that.

But a show like that would just make most of us look bad! Of course you'd get two or three exceptional 'technical' DJ's on the show that would Wow the audience with their turntable skills, but it would not take into consideration people like us, who work hard, simply playing music that people like, without going too much over the top.

Yes, mixing and scratching etc. is a skill, but in the real world, or in MY world, people just want to hear good music - not always mixed or beat-matched, but played in a pleasing and well thought out order.

I love mixing, but as a mobile DJ, who specialises in family parties, I rarely get the chance. It's not about your DJ skills, but more about the music you play to entertain people.

I'd be crap in a competition...
Summer is here! Only 4 things we need - cold beer, hot ladies, loud music, and more cold beer!

Kev Just said what I wanted :)

I don't think these showmakers knows WTF is going on in the DJ world.

What is next? DJ Somebody Scratch Concert Worldwide tour? And we people would be like: We saw this s**t before... not worth it...

I dont think its going to appeal. Most people can relate to a singer, we have all had a sing song in the car, or bath or whatever, we've all been singing, to one level or another, all our lives. Its easy for most people to judge how pleasant or unpleasant someone's voice is. Being entertained by a variety type of act is as old as the hills! People who watch the X Factor or whatever will probably watch this for the first episode and think to themselves "what the???.." and turn off. I think that it'll have to be more based on the personality of the contestant, getting the audience engaged straight away.If there is some young guy/girl standing there, head down, headphones on, I dont think it'll be interesting or engaging enough for the general public. If they are very technical, people wont have a clue! Not sure Cowell really knows his subject this time!!!
