Problems getting pre-cueing feature to work

Postby johtso on 08 Sep 2014, 20:45

I've been struggling to get the precueing feature to work to no avail.

Whatever I do, one of the channels seems to be lost.

I'm testing using a simple left/right auto test containing a noise in each channel, alternating every second or so.

It sounds perfectly fine in "normal" mode.

With nothing plugged into my phone, forcing "split" mode causes one of the channels to be lost completely. I would expect both left and right to be flattened to mono and both be audible.

When I plug a pair of headphones in, I can still only hear a single channel.

Unsurprisingly, given the missing channel in the previous two tests, I can also only hear one channel when using my newly acquired Griffin DJ splitter cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-GC35873 ... 00AE7D2HM/).

Am I misunderstanding something?

Surely both left and right channels should be audible when using "split" mode right? Isn't that the whole point of "split" mode?

Would be very grateful for any advice!

Cheers

Split mode sends master to one side and preview to other on output connector. Preview gets volume when head phone button on. Added to this volume is the Mix fader whoch can bring in master volume to preview.
Master volume is determined by Cross fader.
DJ cable splits each output from mono to double mono. So splitter output is double left or double right. This is the difference woth a normal splitter which provide stereo twice.
So having sound on one side when direct connect of headphone woul be normal. Your splitter should however always 2 sides working in headphone.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm still not completely clear on what the output is expected to be in split mode.

For simplicity's sake, let's say there is no level on preview, only master.

In "normal" mode, left channel of master goes to left output, right channel of master goes to right output.

In "split" mode what I would expect is the left and right channels of preview combined to be sent though either left or right output.

What I'm experiencing is a single channel of master going out of a single channel of the stereo output, with the other channel of master gone completely.

Surely master left and right are supposed to be combined and sent through one channel of the stereo output, and preview left and right should be combined and sent through the other channel?

With the behaviour I'm experiencing, using a splitter cable for pre cueing means that, if you are playing a song that has vocals on only one channel, you _completely_ lose the vocals. That's surely not what's supposed to happen is it?

And here's a video demonstrating the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aC8wWERr1Q

I assume the behaviour should be the same whether or not you have a device plugged into the headphone socket (I haven't noticed any difference with headphones plugged in)

There are limitations to using split mode. Your example of vocals on one channel is clear. Creating mono from stereo isn't that easy. So a new audio stream would have to be created. For many songs the 'average' of L+R will sound OK. Other songs might be messed up by this approach.

The audio technique in android is still in development. In upcoming versions more options are expected to be build in, like multi-channeling. This might open up a new bunch of options to make a smartdevice being closer to the PC/MAC version.

But first Google has to deliver it and then manufacturers have the option to build it in upon their decision.. maybe only for new devices.

Right, yeah, it's not so straight forward going from stereo to mono.

So what is the current stereo -> mono strategy? Is it just taking one of the channels and throwing the other away as I seem to be experiencing? That would be rather disappointing as everyone seemed to say that the audio quality "wasn't great", but was good enough. Only having one channel really completely destroys the music..

Hi,

In fact, yes. Split does separate the two channels (L,R), keeping only the left channel.
It is not really good but it is due to Android limitation. For the moment we cannot choose natively how to handle outputs.

Android L, with the USB Audio Interface support, should bring more features to enable us to manage differently the way we send audio.

Sorry about this

Has the situation changed at all with the release of Lollipop and the upcoming release of Android "M"?
